Travelling the distance to visit a theme park might sound borderline old school but my travel research suggests otherwise. To give a twist to the list, I have steered clear off the "Disney theme parks" around the world and hunted for the most imaginative and unconventional theme parks in the world that can give even adults an immersive experience.

1. Ferari World, Abu Dhabi

The Ferrari Theme World holds true to the aesthetic of the brand. It's architecture is the celebration of Ferrari's design icon. There are more than 20 attractions inside this park that are great for adults and kids alike. For travellers, Ferarri World is one of the best theme parks across the world that is an obvious adventure while visiting Abu Dhabi.

2. Wunderland Kalkar

This amusement park in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany is built at an abandoned nuclear reactor site. The power plant was never put to actual use due to the protests and limited resources. Dutch entrepreneur Hennie Van Der Most bought the site and turned it into an amusement park. Wunderland Kalkar receives more than 600,000 visitors every year.

3. Warner Bros Movie World in Australia

An obvious inclusion to this list of the best theme parks in the world is Warner Bros Movie World at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The park was first opened in 1991. Movie buffs and in fact, all kinds of travellers visit this incredible theme park to witness some rides and shows that are simply the benchmark for imagination and creative effort. Again, don't mistake it for a kids park; many movie lovers count it on their bucket list adventure.

4. Legoland

This children and family park in Billund, Denmark has nine stunning parks across the globe. An adventure essentially for kids younger than 11 years, this gorgeously-designed theme park is a Lego wonderland. A must have experience inside Billund's Legoland is the Miniland. It consists of miniature lego models of landscapes, sights and famous buildings across the world.

5. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Reproducing the world of Harry Potter for its fans across the world, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter themed motion rides are present in Orlando, Florida; Universal Studios, California and Universal Studio Japan. This immersive experience of a motion-based dark ride starts at Hogsmede where the wizards reside and take you through the classrooms and corridors of Hogwarts. For Potterheads across the world, this experience is life altering.

6. Jurassic Park The Ride

Another thrilling adventure that awaits you at Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan is Jurassic Park The Ride. Counted as one of the best theme parks in the world, the experience is designed to give visitors a wholesome feel of Isla Nublar, the Jurassic World. The boat ride begins at Ultrasaur Lagoon, where you can see the Ultrasaurus devouring plants. The experience continues with Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptors and other imaginative creatures lunging out at visitors from unexpected corners making it a exciting adventure for kids as well as grown-ups.

7. Bon Bon Land

One of the most bizarre and best theme parks in the world, Bon Bon Denmark deserves a mention on the list because of the sheer immaturity, adult-oriented content and toilet humour pervading the entire experience. The park has 60 different attractions, roller coasters and water rides. Worm, the Stud, Seagull Blobs, Horses Bulbs, Fold Cod, Crow Trees, the Horse Dropping are some popular attractions.

8. Jeju Love Land

South Korea's Jeju Love Land is an adult outdoor sculpture theme park on Jeju Island. With interactive models, the park is based on the theme of sex and has emerged as a popular honeymoon destination not only for locals but for travellers across the globe. Around 140 distinct sculptures show the unique work of Korean artists. It is only obvious that only 18+ visitors are allowed at this park.
