Reaching the Base Camp: The Journey Begins
The first two days of the Brahmatal Trek are a thrilling prelude to the adventure ahead, packed with travel, excitement, and anticipation. Our journey kicked off with a flight from Bangalore to Delhi, followed by a train ride from Delhi to Kathgodam, where we took a quick breather in a cozy hotel. But the real action began the next day when we embarked on a winding, thrilling drive to Lohajung, the starting point of our trek. The roads were full of sharp turns, but the views were so stunning, they made the bumpy ride feel like a breeze. With every twist and turn, the excitement built up as we neared our destination, where the true adventure would begin.
Upon reaching Lohajung, it was time to recharge for the trek ahead. The vibe in this quaint mountain village was the perfect mix of calm and exhilaration. As we settled in for a well-deserved rest before hitting the trail, the sense of anticipation grew. The next day, we would lace up our boots and set foot on the legendary Brahmatal Trek. The journey to the base camp wasn’t just about physical distance—it was about building the momentum, soaking in the scenery, and getting mentally prepped for the exhilarating trek that lay ahead.
Climbing on Day 1: A Slight Change in Plans
The first day of the trek was full of surprises and a bit of a change in plans. Due to heavy snowfall higher up on the trail, our guide decided it was best to add two additional mid-camps to ensure a safer, slower pace. This minor adjustment turned out to be a blessing in disguise, allowing us to enjoy the journey without rushing. The terrain was tricky at first, but with every step, we felt more energized and ready for what was ahead. As we climbed higher, the anticipation grew—soon, we’d be fully immersed in the pristine beauty of the Himalayas.
Bekaltal: The First Base Camp
This was our chance to acclimatize and get our trekking legs in shape. The first 2 kilometers were a tough warm-up, but our bodies soon adjusted, and we found a steady rhythm. The trek became easier, and our guide began sharing fascinating stories about the region, making the hike feel like a journey through time. Engaging with the locals is a must on treks like this—it adds a rich layer to the experience. By 2 p.m., we arrived at camp, greeted by warm tea and the sight of snow-capped peaks all around. After a challenging but rewarding trek, we reached our first base camp at Bekaltal—a serene lake nestled in the mountains, where we would spend the night. After resting, we set out on a short acclimatization hike, essential for a good night’s sleep at high altitude. As the sun began to set, the excitement kicked in—tomorrow, we would venture further into the snow, and we couldn’t wait to see what lay ahead!
The First Snow: A Thrilling Start to Day 2
The excitement on Day 2 was palpable—today, we were finally going to see our first taste of snow! The energy was off the charts as we set off, the thought of the sparkling white landscape ahead propelling us forward. Though the climb was steeper compared to yesterday, the sheer thrill of what was to come made it feel effortless. With every step, the world around us transformed, the vibrant greens of the forest slowly giving way to a glistening white wonderland. It was a sight that was nothing short of mesmerizing. As we layered up to brace the cold, we kept our spirits high, knowing that soon we’d reach our next camp, Tilandi, nestled at a perfect spot for some much-needed rest.
Tilandi Camp: A Peaceful Oasis in the Mountains
When we finally arrived at Tilandi Camp, the effort was so worth it. Surrounded by towering mountains and tucked away in a natural valley, the camp was the perfect retreat from the chilly winds. It felt like a cozy sanctuary in the heart of the Himalayas. Once we set up camp, it was time to unwind a bit with a cool-down session, followed by a hands-on CPR training session. Learning vital survival skills while surrounded by such epic scenery felt surreal—it's not every day you get to soak in both adventure and knowledge in such a magnificent setting.
Snow Slides and the Best Sunset Ever
As if the day wasn’t perfect enough, we were in for another treat—a small hill nearby, ideal for snow slides! Laughter echoed as we took turns sliding down, the sheer joy of playing in the snow turning us all into kids again. To top it off, we went for a brief acclimatization walk as the sun began to dip behind the mountains. The sky erupted in hues of orange, pink, and purple—without a doubt, the best sunset of my life. The entire experience felt like a dream, and as we settled in for the night, there was a sense of fulfillment and excitement for the days ahead.
The Challenging Hike to Jhandi Top
Day 3 was one of the most anticipated and challenging days of the trek—we were heading to Jhandi Top, and the excitement was off the charts. We started early, knowing it would be a tough climb, and because we were the first group to head up after the heavy snowfall, we had to blaze our own trail through fresh powder. Every step was a mix of exhilaration and determination as we made our way up the steep, snow-covered slopes. Reaching the summit of Jhandi Top was a huge triumph, and we soaked in the breathtaking views, despite the thin air making every breath feel like a victory. From the top, we had a stunning view of the Brahmatal Lake, frozen in its icy splendor. Though we couldn’t trek all the way down to the lake, seeing it from above was a sight to behold—an untouched, glittering expanse of ice that seemed to stretch on forever.
Celebrating at Gujreni Camp
After soaking up the views at the top, it was time to head back down. We had a packed lunch and began our descent to Gujreni Camp, where the celebrations awaited. By the time we reached camp, it was pitch dark, but the mood couldn’t have been brighter. The whole group was in high spirits after conquering the peak. We cranked up the music, danced around the warmth of the bonfire, and celebrated in true adventure style—surrounded by thick snow, the mountains looming in the distance, and the crackling of the fire keeping the chill at bay. It felt like one big party, a well-earned reward after a day of hard work and unforgettable moments.
A Magical Snowy Goodbye!
Day began with a sense of nostalgia, as we started our descent, already cherishing the incredible memories we had made. But the mountains weren’t ready to let us go just yet—they decided to bid us farewell in the most magical way. Out of nowhere, the snowflakes started falling, blanketing the entire landscape in a soft, shimmering white veil. The snowfall was so thick, we could barely see a few meters ahead, but that only added to the thrill and wonder of it all. It felt like we were walking through a winter wonderland, every step more surreal than the last. The air was filled with excitement as we continued descending, singing songs, laughing, and making the most of every last moment in this snowy paradise. The mountains had given us one final, unforgettable gift before we left—and we were soaking it all in.
As we reached Lohajung—our final destination—our bodies were tired, our minds were overflowing with memories, and our stomachs were ready for one last feast of hearty mountain food. We sat together, savoring the moment, feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude and accomplishment for everything we had experienced. The adventure had come to an end, but the memories would stay with us forever. With full hearts and content bellies, it was time to say goodbye to the mountains and head back to reality… the office desk was waiting, but our spirits were still soaring high.
