Cherai; one of the less traveled beaches of Kerala

My first ever solo trip and I had to choose Kerala. Not just because I am one of those over-biased fans of this beautiful state. But, because I wish to get people introduced to the less traveled parts of Kerala. That list being really big, I thought of choosing a place that is close to Kochi. Beautiful parts of the island named Vypin; get set to visit them with me.

My journey started from the Kochi airport. I booked a cab with Uber right from the airport. Cherai is 26 km from Kochi and Uber charges you approx. Rs. 500. Note that you also get Taxi from the airport. But, their rate is usually a little higher.

Cherai is situated amidst the backwater and the sea; the backwater runs behind and the sea in the front. You can find hotels on both the banks. I chose to stay at Blue Waters Cherai that was situated on the bank of the backwater. Absolutely gorgeous little place right in front of the Cherai beach. My room was facing towards the backwater and hence I got to enjoy that view as well.

Having checked in I started walking down the beach. And this is what I saw.

• Tourists enjoying the sea.

• Localities pouring in to see what’s the catch of the day.

• People coming over to experience thrilling water sports.

With lunchtime nearing, I settled down in a cozy place to enjoy some amazing sea-food. And there I found the Chilliout Café right on the Cherai beach. Tuna was the catch of the day and that’s what I settled for; a glass of refreshing ice-tea and a tuna steak freshly cooked to medium rare, with sides of herbed rice and salad.

Having done with lunch and the sun increasing the intensity of its heat, I headed back to my room. With a view like this and the ambiance so cozy, I dozed off immediately.

Evening was meant to be spent at the Munambam beach. About 4 km from the Cherai beach, it is an ideal location to catch the perfect sunset. Munambam beach is a delta region where the backwater and the sea meet. I boarded an auto from the Cherai beach and headed to this perfect location to catch the sun go down.

You can find this church right on the road to the Munambam Beach

Note that this place is also a fishing harbor that is busy throughout the day. Not just the fishermen, you can also find localities and tourists trying their hands in fishing. A famous hangout place for families of the surrounding area.

Do try the freshly prepared fish cutlets at the food stalls. You will be amazed to know that one fish cutlet and a cup of hot tea would cost you only Rs 20. And rest assured of the taste; it was heavenly.

My evening came to an end with a bottle of chilled beer and French fries at the Baywatch Beach Homes Hotel & Resort.

Dinner scene was simple, a portion of well-cooked prawn curry and Kerala parota to go with it. After the sumptuous dinner, it was all about a private affair in my beautiful room. Me, the pillows, the soft blanket, the view of the backwater, and a good night’s sleep.

The backwater facing section of Blue Waters Cherai is towards the east and hence you get to catch the perfect sunrise. The time for sunrise is usually between 6:15 am to 6:30 am. So, do not forget to set the alarm.

The beach is usually secluded in the morning with only the morning walkers performing their daily chores. So, once you are done watching the beautiful sunrise, do take a cup of tea and head to the beach.

Having done with breakfast, I checked out of the hotel. Needless to say, that the hospitality of the staffs had got me bold and I promised to visit the property soon.

I booked an Uber cab to the airport. Cherai being a tourist place (though not that popular), availability of cabs in the region is quite good.

Before reaching the airport, my last stop was going to be the fishing farms of Njarackal. Njarakkal Aqua Tourism project by Matsyafed is a huge 125-hectare brackish water fish farm, situated on the other side of the Vypin island.

The farm offers numerous facilities for spending a complete day there. You could relax on hammocks, swings, or benches on the bunds under the shady coconut trees, try your hands in fishing or even do boating. Evening is the best time to visit this place. My visit to this place was a relatively short one. For I had to head straight to the airport.

My first solo trip came to a beautiful end. I completed it doing all that I would do with a company. I chatted a lot, ran along the beach, bumped into families, clicked pics for them, picked up few goodies for home, and yeah, I did manage to get hold of a mug of chilled beer. I wasn’t very sure of having the beer though. Mainly because the café where I was sitting during the evening, was mostly filled with families and groups of men. I was the only female sitting alone in one corner lost somewhere watching the sun go down. But then something clicked my mind and I knew I could get back safe to my hotel that was just 300 meters away from the café. And there I went, happily ordered a bottle of chilled beer and a plate of crispy French fries to go with it.

My solo trip taught me a lesson, a really important one. Watch our surroundings, gauge the situation, and just go with the flow. Stay tuned to know all the other essential lessons that I get to learn from the other trips.
