Day trip from Bangalore - Devarayanadurga, Namada Chilume, Nandi Dwara

Tripoto

Devarayanadurga, located about 70 km from Bangalore in Karnataka, is a historic hill station and pilgrimage site known for its rocky hills, temples, and scenic beauty. The place derives its name from Mysore king Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar, who fortified it in the 17th century. At the summit lies the famous Yoganarasimha Swamy Temple, while the Bhoganarasimha Swamy Temple sits at the foothills. Surrounded by dense forests and dotted with natural springs like Namada Chilume, the hill has been a spiritual and cultural hub for centuries, attracting devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

We started from Bangalore at 6 a.m. and reached the foothills much before the temples opened for darshan. Since vehicles are allowed up to the top parking area, the actual trek is a short one, taking about 20–30 minutes on well-laid stone steps. The climb, though brief, offers fresh air, greenery, and occasional panoramic views of the valleys below.

The temple at the foothill opens at 9 a.m., while the one at the summit opens at 10 a.m., so reaching early meant we could enjoy the quiet hills before the crowds arrived. Overall, the trek is easy, beginner-friendly, and a perfect weekend escape from the city.

After visiting the temples at Devarayanadurga, we stopped by Namada Chilume, a natural spring located at the base of the hill. Legend says that Lord Rama, during his exile, needed water to apply tilak on his forehead and shot an arrow into the ground, from which this perennial spring emerged. Even today, clear water flows from a small opening in the rock, believed to be the very spot from the legend.

Surrounding Namada Chilume is a well-maintained park with walking trails, shaded areas, and a deer enclosure, making it a pleasant stop for families and nature lovers. It’s an ideal spot to rest after the trek, enjoy the greenery, and spend some quiet time near the spring.
