I suggest at least you spend 5 to 6 hours here so that you'll get to know the various traditions and cultures of dakshin kannada. I suggest you to talk to people here,because they are the best guides, and very friendly. Just involve yourself in this blissful celebration..Everyday!!!
The main highlight of your Udupi visit is , udupi's famous Krishna matta Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the Hindu temple of Sri Krishna Temple was founded in the 13th century. The large complex features carved stone archways, statues, and a matha area resembling a living ashram, where daily devotion rituals take place. Keep in mind the temple's defining feature; the god is worshiped through the silver-plated window. During your visit, pick up a few souvenirs from the small stands selling handmade products. The temple attracts droves of tourists and worshipers no matter the season, so prepare to wait in line for a few hours if you want to worship.
Then do try the mangalore buns and Golibaje which is the famous local cuisine here. The best place to have these dishes is "mitra samaj" hotel which is very near to the udupi Krishna mutta. The best time to visit here is in December as the temperature will be 38°C and lows of 25°C at night, it will be hot throughout the year so please do dress appropriately and don't wear warm clothes, also make sure you dress quite decently as we have to respect the cultures of the temple. There are many hotels and lodges available here for stay starting from 1000INR to 3000 INR. It's not too costly, so please visit and experience the blissful moments you spend in udupi
