Mangalore is the coastal city of Karnataka existing on the west coast of the state, basically called Mangaluru or Kudla by the localite. There will be a history behind everything and every place, interestingly some of the names represent mythological culture. Similarly, Mangalore also has a history of its existence and is precious enough to tell further generations about the city and its importance.

Lord Parashurama, one of the avatars of Vishnu reached this part of the earth to practice his penance for a huge massacre he committed by roaming the world 18 times, killing all the Kshatriyas he came across to avenge his mother's death and father's words. For such a huge penance, Parashurama chose this place to worship Shiva as Kadri Manjunatha. One can see the temple and the lingam he worshipped, even today. In the history of Mangalore, Parashurama plays a vital role and in the same context, he guided everyone to find the idol of G0ddess Mangaladevi, who's going to be the protector of the land and also the ruling goddess of the people from that land. His involvement in discovering the importance and existence of Mangaladevi is still scribed and sculptured at the temple's entrance even today.

Even though I have visited many other temples in Mangalore, when I first came to know its mythological history and the traditional culture around it, my energies got super humbled to pay huge respect to the goddess that ruled the land in the role of Shakti. In the year 2024, I visited this temple to keenly observe peacefully instead of rushing amidst festive times because, before this particular visit, I always rushed as I attended only the huge festival times. That gave me a chance to explore every nook and corner of the temple properly focusing on the entrance, sanctum sanctorum, hall of dance, kitchen and its huge premises for various purposes.

It has a huge entrance and one can see the temple's architecture beautifully sculpted with the Navagrahas and Shiva with Nandi. At the entrance, one can read the whole history of the temple and can easily witness the main idol seated on her silver throne. The temples of Mangalore are simple yet extremely elegant with beautiful floral decors. I have visited the temple in the late evening to witness the temple in both day and night hours. The brass scriptures in the entrance drew my attention and once I entered the sanctorum, I felt peaceful and energetic. I spoke with the pandits about the rituals they perform regularly and also on special days. The importance the people give to the goddess is inexplicable because the city itself is named after her.

There a huge interior and exterior premises in the temple complex. Many pandits perform rituals to the goddess day and night according to their shifts and traditions. The temple is named Mahatotbhara Shree Mangaladevi temple and the screening of the rituals and auspicious timings are always available at the entrance of the temple. To its right, one can witness a huge kitchen where the Prasadam or offerings for the goddess are cooked by following rituals and restrictions. To its left, kalavedika exists to conduct all the cultural activities. Every day there would be Annadanam or offering food for people. As I went in the evening, I couldn't participate in it, but I could see huge vessels lined up for drying and wood that could be used as cooking fuel for the next day. It specifies, how the temple management operates conducting such charities regularly under the name of Mangaladevi.

In most of the temples in Mangalore, they perform Annadanam activities regularly. And of course, Mangaladevi temple is treated as the main temple of the city and management won't hesitate a bit to provide comfort to all its visitors and devotees. I have roamed everywhere and spent my time sitting and meditating for some time. Clicked many pictures of architecture and of course myself too. Picked up some Prasadam and a few picture articles to carry as souvenirs from the temple. Altogether, it was a pleasant experience for me to witness a temple that carries so much weight in terms of history, mythology and religious approach.

So if you ever visit Mangalore, don't forget to visit and pay your respect and prayers to Goddess Mangaladevi, the Shakti that rules the land of Parashurama!
