This was going to be my last trip of 2017 as well the first trip of 2018 so we thought we must go to a place where we can start our new year with peace and adventure as I am not one who enjoy going to club or new year parties but yes I love to dance and yes as my mother says "jaise hum apna new year ka first day start karte hain vaisa hi hamara pura year jata hai" I had Ooty and Kodaikanal in my mind and as Ooty is very crowdy in new year I decided to go to the princess of hills - KODAIKANAL

Kodaikanal - The Princess of Hills - first watch this video so you get an idea what i will be talking about:

KODAIKANAL - THE PRINCESS OF HILL STATIONS

How to reach Kodaikanal ?

Via Bus (mid range price)

Depends on from where you are coming let's take Chennai. Chennai to Kodaikanal you can get a direct bus but if you are a budget traveller like me then go till Dindigul or Madurai and then take a govt bus from there to Kodaikanal

We started from Chennai around 11:30pm via decent sleeper bus that costs around INR 700(booked on red bus) till Dindigul and then got a bus from Dindigul to Kodaikanal

Via Flight (high price)

Fly till Madurai airport and from there you can get a direct bus to Kodaikanal (any govt bus)

Via Train (best for budget travel and comfortable also)

Travel via train till Dindigul or Madurai and then get a direct bus to Kodaikanal (any govt bus)

Where to stay in Kodaikanal ?

We stayed in Hotel Valley View Inn and I would say do not please book that hotel the staff is not at all helpful and very lazy and also no valley view so I will categorize this section in three parts ₹0-700 price hotels, ₹700-1500 hotels, ₹1500-2500,₹2500 and above

PLACES TO VISIT IN KODAIKANAL

There is a lot to explore in Kodaikanal and every place is nearby only I think 2 days is enough to explore this all so there are private taxi unions who provides different prices for cabs and jeeps have a look here.

But if you are a budget traveller and want to explore more of Kodaikanal then try exploring via walk or maybe do hitchhiking (ask for lifts) its a tourist place and you easily get lifts because I did the same :)

First Day Itinerary for Kodaikanal

Day 1

1. Cycling or Horse Riding around Kodaikanal Lake

Do it early morning before having the breakfast as it will be less crowdy and feel the breeze of the lake and the rays of sun one of the best experience i had in Kodai :)

Cycling at Kodaikanal Lake

2. Vatakkanal Waterfalls (5km from Kodaikanal Lake)

This is on way to Mountain View and Dolphin nose view point so you can go via walk through the jungles(we took lift till jungles) or via vehicle. I would say go by walk you will definetly love the trek.

Second Day Itinerary for Kodaikanal

Again we thought of covering the next destination via walk and hitchhiking and guess what it was too much fun as in this route you will not be going via jungles as we did in Day1 but will be going via road so best chances of hitchhiking.

Day 2

7. Wax Museum (4.5km form Kodaikanal Busstand)

You will find Wax Museum first while going on this route bu they do not have so good collection so you can skip this maybe click some pics with superman wax statue which is outside the museum.

Now its a superwomen

Can't say much about this place as it was full of fog when we went there but heard a lot about this point maybe when you go there please tell me how it was.

9. Pillar Rocks

With a beautiful mini garden, the place is named Pillar Rocks as it has three vertically positioned boulders with height of 400 feet.

10. Guna Caves

Guna caves (Devil’s Kitchen) are deep bat-infested chambers between the three gigantic boulders that are the Pillar Rocks. The deep narrow ravines of the caves are now closed to public due to the tragic deaths of twelve youths there. These dangerous caves are highly protected now, and tourists can see sections of the cave system from afar.

Also really good place to get pictures clicked as full area is covered with tree roots which makes it look really horror.

Read more about Guna Caves here

11. 500 year old tree

There is a Jamun tree located in a garden in Shola Road near Kodaikanal Lake. This gnarled tree is more than 500 years old and it is arguably the oldest tree of Kodai region.
