Giving back to the earth : The story of how some Tamilnadu women revived a dying river!

Tripoto

It turns out that it’s not always that humans are actively involved in depleting earth of all of its resources. And this has been proven by some women of Tamilnadu who actually ended up saving a dying river. Their story sure fills us with hope and lots of inspiration, so go on and give it a read.

The river Naganadi in a village near Vellore which goes by the name ‘Kammavaanpettai’ has become dry to the point of dying nearly 15 years ago. Added to that, the village and the families within it weren’t doing all that well either. The men have all become alcoholic and the others were leaving the village.

The women then got help from ‘Art of Living’ and learned the techniques of getting their river back to life – and this isn’t isn’t a simple process either. It needs them to dig up wells to collect rainwater so that eventually the river gets flowing. And after they have toiled for the last few years, the river Naganadi now runs full and beautiful.

And that’s how the group of about 30 women could bring a river and thereby, their entire village back to life. Now this group has formed a self help committee which continues to take care of the river Naganadi as well as work more such projects. This story of how the river Naganadi and the women of Kammavaanpettai ended up saving each other and bringing each other back to life is a wonderful example of how we can build a beautiful relationship with nature and our environment. Kudos to these amazing women!
