Let us now come to the most debatable question of the century that has consistently perplexed travellers over the years.
Till date, there exists no universal rating system for hotels, resorts and accommodation options in different countries. Travel companies and numerous other sources have come up with a set of their own rating systems. The two popular parameters are Forbes and AAA's yearly listings.
Forbes' Star Ratings
The Forbes list works on a five star system, considered one of the most stringent in the industry, and rates some of the best hotels, restaurants and spas around the world. Clearly most of the properties that we see online on popular travel sites don't make it to the Forbes list and the star rating system is blindly replicated. The hotel owners arbitrarily decide upon the number of stars of their properties which obviously makes the decision process confusing for a regular traveller.
AAA Diamond Ratings
AAA rates accommodations through diamond ratings and other than that, there are also AAA-approved hotels across the world that promise the best experience in terms of accommodation, amenities and services. AAA's five diamond properties are the chosen best among the top hotels from around the world.
Amidst all the mystification that has left most of us confused, we have been travelling and making decisions on... guesswork, all this while.
For selection of hotels in India and their categorisation, let's now look at the official rules and regulations issued by the Ministry of Tourism in India. The categories outlined by the tourism board are:
Star Category Hotels: 1 Star, 2 Star, 3 Star, 4 Star, 5 Star and 5 Star Deluxe.
Demystifying the arbitrary ratings to some extent, Hotel and Restaurant Division of Ministry of Tourism, has outlined numerous facilities that are Necessary (N) and Desirable (D) for the correct classification of Hotels and Restaurants.
