I wait throughout the year for the winters, because I love winters. This is the time when we celebrate our culture, this is the time of Navratra, Dussehra, Diwali and finally a new year with some new hopes.

One more reason I like winter is, this is the time when we can easily travel to new places and mostly hotels in North India provides you a great discount as the tourist season is off.

This time I am sharing story of a must visit place in Navratra. A place famous for its history, and the place in "Sharda devi mandir, Satna" aka "Maihar ki mata".

How to reach:

By flight/Air:

The nearest airport to Maihar is at Jabalpur which is about 153 km. Although Jabalpur is connected by air to Bhopal and Delhi, the airport doesn’t function on a regular basis. Alternatively, tourists can avail the Khajuraho Airport (137 kms) or the Allahabad Airport (222 kms) which are also connected to major cities of the country, respectively. Regular local/state government buses and prepaid taxies ply from all airports to Maihar.

By Train:

Maihar Railway Station is situated in between Katni and Satna stations of West Central Railway. The Maihar railhead is well connected with regular trains with the rest of the country. The nearest big railway station, that is, at Jabalpur is situated about 162 KM away from Maihar. One can choose from a wide variety of trains to get to Maihar.

By Road:

Maihar is well connected by road. National highway 7 is the nearest connecting highway. Once you enter the city, you can take benefits of local/government buses, autos and taxies to move within the city.

कैसे पहुंचे मंदिर-

राजधानी दिल्ली से मैहर तक की सड़क से दूरी लगभग 1000 किलोमीटर है। ट्रेन से पहुंचने के लिए महाकौशल व रीवा एक्सप्रेस उपयुक्त हैं। दिल्ली से चलने वाली महाकौशल एक्सप्रेस सीधे मैहर ही पहुंचती है। स्टेशन से उतरने के बाद किसी धर्मशाला या होटल में थोड़ा विश्राम करने के बाद चढ़ाई आरंभ की जा सकती है। रीवा एक्सप्रेस से यात्रा करने वाले भक्तजनों को मजगांवां पर उतरना चाहिए। वहां से मैहर लगभग 15 किलोमीटर दूर है।

मैहर देवी का मंदिर: ये है माँ शारदा का इकलौता मंदिर, यहाँ आज भी आते हैं आल्हा और उदल|

कहते हैं मां हमेशा ऊंचे स्थानों पर विराजमान होती हैं। उत्तर में जैसे लोग मां दुर्गा के दर्शन के लिए पहाड़ों को पार करते हुए वैष्णो देवी तक पहुंचते हैं। ठीक उसी तरह मध्य प्रदेश के सतना जिले में भी 1063 सीढ़ियां लांघ कर माता के दर्शन करने जाते हैं। सतना जिले की मैहर तहसील के पास त्रिकूट पर्वत पर स्थित माता के इस मंदिर को मैहर देवी का मंदिर कहा जाता है। मैहर का मतलब है मां का हार। मैहर नगरी से 5 किलोमीटर दूर त्रिकूट पर्वत पर माता शारदा देवी का वास है। पर्वत की चोटी के मध्य में ही शारदा माता का मंदिर है। पूरे भारत में सतना का मैहर मंदिर माता शारदा का अकेला मंदिर है। इसी पर्वत की चोटी पर माता के साथ ही श्री काल भैरवी, भगवान, हनुमान जी, देवी काली, दुर्गा, श्री गौरी शंकर, शेष नाग, फूलमति माता, ब्रह्म देव और जलापा देवी की भी पूजा की जाती है।

आल्हा और उदल करते है सबसे पहले माँ के दर्शन

क्षेत्रीय लोगों के अनुसार अल्हा और उदल जिन्होंने पृथ्वीराज चौहान के साथ युद्ध किया था, वे भी शारदा माता के बड़े भक्त हुआ करते थे। इन दोनों ने ही सबसे पहले जंगलों के बीच शारदा देवी के इस मंदिर की खोज की थी। इसके बाद आल्हा ने इस मंदिर में 12 सालों तक तपस्या कर देवी को प्रसन्न किया था। माता ने उन्हें अमरत्व का आशीर्वाद दिया था। आल्हा माता को शारदा माई कह कर पुकारा करता था। तभी से ये मंदिर भी माता शारदा माई के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो गया। आज भी यही मान्यता है कि माता शारदा के दर्शन हर दिन सबसे पहले आल्हा और उदल ही करते हैं। मंदिर के पीछे पहाड़ों के नीचे एक तालाब है, जिसे आल्हा तालाब कहा जाता है। यही नहीं, तालाब से 2 किलोमीटर और आगे जाने पर एक अखाड़ा मिलता है, जिसके बारे में कहा जाता है कि यहां आल्हा और उदल कुश्ती लड़ा करते थे।

क्या है मंदिर से जुड़ी कहानी-

माना जाता है कि दक्ष प्रजापति की पुत्री सती शिव से विवाह करना चाहती थी। उनकी यह इच्छा राजा दक्ष को मंजूर नहीं थी। वे शिव को भूतों और अघोरियों का साथी मानते थे। फिर भी सती ने अपनी जि़द पर भगवान शिव से विवाह कर लिया। एक बार राजा दक्ष ने यज्ञ करवाया। उस यज्ञ में ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, इंद्र और अन्य देवी-देवताओं को आमंत्रित किया, लेकिन जान-बूझकर अपने जमाता भगवान शंकर को नहीं बुलाया। शंकर जी की पत्नी और दक्ष की पुत्री सती इससे बहुत आहत हुईं।

यज्ञ-स्थल पर सती ने अपने पिता दक्ष से शंकर जी को आमंत्रित न करने का कारण पूछा। इस पर दक्ष प्रजापति ने भगवान शंकर को अपशब्द कहे। इस अपमान से दुखी होकर सती ने यज्ञ-अग्नि कुंड में कूदकर अपनी प्राणाहुति दे दी। भगवान शंकर को जब इस दुर्घटना का पता चला, तो क्रोध से उनका तीसरा नेत्र खुल गया।

उन्होंने यज्ञ कुंड से सती के पार्थिव शरीर को निकाल कर कंधे पर उठा लिया और गुस्से में तांडव करने लगे। ब्रह्मांड की भलाई के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने ही सती के शरीर को 52 भागों में विभाजित कर दिया। जहां भी सती के अंग गिरे, वहां शक्तिपीठों का निर्माण हुआ। अगले जन्म में सती ने हिमवान राजा के घर पार्वती के रूप में जन्म लिया और घोर तपस्या कर शिवजी को फिर से पति रूप में प्राप्त किया। माना जाता है कि यहां मां का हार गिरा था। हालांकि, सतना का मैहर मंदिर शक्ति पीठ नहीं है। फिर भी लोगों की आस्था इतनी अडिग है कि यहां सालों से माता के दर्शन के लिए भक्तों का रेला लगा रहता है।

दी जाती थी बलि-

इसके अलावा, ये भी मान्यता है कि यहां पर सर्वप्रथम आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य ने 9वीं-10वीं शताब्दी में पूजा-अर्चना की थी। शारदा देवी का मंदिर सिर्फ आस्था और धर्म के नजरिये से खास नहीं है। इस मंदिर का अपना ऐतिहासिक महत्व भी है।

माता शारदा की मूर्ति की स्थापना विक्रम संवत 559 में की गई थी। मूर्ति पर देवनागरी लिपि में शिलालेख भी अंकित है। इसमें बताया गया है कि सरस्वती के पुत्र दामोदर ही कलियुग के व्यास मुनि कहे जाएंगे। दुनिया के जाने-माने इतिहासकार ए कनिंग्घम ने इस मंदिर पर विस्तार से शोध किया है। इस मंदिर में प्राचीन काल से ही बलि देने की प्रथा चली आ रही थी, लेकिन 1922 में सतना के राजा ब्रजनाथ जूदेव ने पशु बलि को पूरी तरह से प्रतिबंधित कर दिया।

Temple Story:

The temple of Maa Sharda is situated on a height of aprox 587 feets between the round shaped hills called Trikoot parvat and is one of the 51 Shaktipeetha. Maihar wali Mata is an another name of Mata Sharda, a form of Mata Durga. In actual Maihar is the name of the place where the temple of Mata Sharda is situated.

Millions of pilgrims visit the temple all-round the year. It is considered to be a very powerful place of worship. It is about 5 KM from Maihar Station. There are 1063 steps to reach the top of the hill, now ropeway facility is also available there, it is a great boon to the pilgrims (particularly the old and the handicapped) to fulfill their wish to have the audience of Mother Goddess Sharda.

According to a belief, when Prithviraj Chauhan defeated king Parmal then in anger Aalha took out his sword to kill all the army of Prihviraj Chauhan but goddess Sharda caught his hands and stopped him.

There is an Aalha and Udal arena in the forest. There is also a pond at this place whose water never finishes. It is said that even today Aalha comes everyday to offer flowers to Mata.It is said that the devotees like Aalha-Udal and Dhanu etc., established the temple of Mata to gain victory in the war and to please the goddess he even sacrificed his son Indal. The belief also states that Aalha -Udal comes to the temple after it is closed to worship Mata.

There is one ancient inscription near the feet of stone sculpture of Sharda Devi situated in Sharda Devi temple. There is another statue of Lord Narsingh along with Sharda Devi. These statues were established by Nupula Deva in 502 AD.

Pooja Timings: From 6.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Best time to visit: Anytime of the year but preferably from October to March to avoid hot summers.
