If I begin with how we started out with this journey, I would say it was totally unplanned. I had planned the exact days of the holiday but the destination remained undecided till the time I was sitting at ISBT bus station. Can you imagine the thrill? But all the last minute decisions were worth the risk as the adrenaline was kicking in as I sat in the bus thinking about all the things to do in Amritsar.

So, here is the list of all the interesting things to do in Amritsar in 2 days -

1. Have a glassful of sweetened Lassi

"Amritsar aaye aur lassi nahi piye, to kya khaak Amritsar aaye". The sweetened drink often served in an earthen glass called 'kulhad' is the specialty of this land and one of the best things to eat in Amritsar. Especially if you are visiting the place in hot summers, this cool drink is a relief from all the sun shining over your head. The best part is that it is quite affordable as the shops sell a glassful for 20-30 INR.

2. Attend the Wagah-Attari border ceremony

A flag-lowering ceremony is held at the Wagah-Attari border daily at sunset by both sides - India and Pakistan. Along with the interactive patriotic fiesta that precedes it, the ceremony is a huge attraction for people who visit the event. An elaborate parade takes place during retreat ceremony which involves really impressive foot stomping maneuvers of the troops with the crowd chanting patriotic slogans. It feels like a movie scene and is worth experiencing during your visit to Amritsar. Keep it at the top of your list of things to do in Amritsar.

3. Witness history come live at Jallianwala Bagh

Step back in time at Jallianwala Bagh and relive one of the most infamous incidents in Indian history which took place in the year 1919. Enter through a gatehouse and walk along the narrow passageway that leads into the now peaceful park. It has been 100 years but you cannot help feeling emotional as you look at the walls which still have the bullet marks embedded in them. The place sings a saga of the people who died while trying to protect the country from the Britishers. They will always be remembered as true heroes.

4. Try the local delicacies

You can completely forget about your diet chart when you are in the culinary capital of India and dip your hands deep in butter-soaked food and relish famous cuisines like Amritsari kulche, chicken tikka and so much more from the local dhabas. The food is so affordable that you easily order lots and lots of it to satisfy your appetite. Eating all the varieties of food should definitely be at the top of your things to do in Amritsar. You will definitely leave this place with happy taste buds and "sweet" memories.

5. Have Langar at the Golden Temple

Last but not least, you should definitely try the langar served at the Golden Temple after offering your prayers. Enjoy a delicious meal sitting on the floor mats with thousands of other people in the world's largest kitchen. You can eat as much as you want there and the kitchen welcomes people from all religions. It is truly one of the best things to do in Amritsar. Apart from the langar, the Golden Temple commonly known as Harmandir Sahib is a truly captivating structure standing in the middle of a lake. This is the one thing which has people coming to Amritsar from around the world.

I am so sure, this place would be an amazing experience for you.
