Mahuli fort is the highest point in #Thane District of #Maharashtra and is a popular trekking destination and a paradise for rock climbers. The fort is at an altitude of 2815 feet and Mahuli village is the base for Mahuli fort trekking.

Mahuli fort is situated in Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads over Mokhada, Wada and Shahapur talukas of Thane District. The sanctuary covers an area of around 320 sq. km and houses various forests like Vaitarna, Khardi, Shahapur and many more. The Tansa Lake, which is situated within the sanctuary, provides water to the wildlife. The sanctuary also houses around 50 species of animals such as langur, mouse-deer, wild boar, sambar-deer and four-horned antelope to name a few. Moreover, travellers can also explore around 200 species of water as well as land birds.

History of Mahuli Fort

The creator of this fort is Mughals. In 1485 this place came under the rule of Nijamshahi dynasty. Later, Shivaji took this fort in 1658. In 1661 it was given back and was won again by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In the treaty of Purandar, in 1665, Marathas lost these forts again. In Feb 1670, Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli but failed. After two months, Moropant Pingle conquered these forts and they became part of Swarajya. Till 1817, Shivaji’s dynasty owned the fort. Later, the fort came under the rule of the British.
