“Some retire with an amazing career and some retire with a handful of unaccomplished dreams.”
Well, having said that, you can’t afford to turn your dreams into a nightmare; can you? Especially if you have a successful career, and a couple of wishes unfulfilled.
But for David C Moore from London, it wasn’t too late to reboot, retool and revive his Travel Bucket List after living a secured professional life. He owned an advertising agency in London and soon retired as a consultant for multiple international brands.
While most of the retired folks would pander to the fruits of their past, David and his wife, Helene decided to think beyond the curve by re-starting their life from the scratch. But this time, it was not a career or any side gig that would mint some dollars.
In fact, the duo hatched a plan that would take them on a world tour. WOW! Isn’t that an amazing way to begin a trip? Well, don’t you want to know how the London couple planned their big fat escapade?
Sometime during 2017, after getting retired from what you call a great professional career, one fine day, David, and his wife stepped into a DIY mode by pinning colorful pins on the world map. While David picked the blue ones, Helene opted for the pink ones. By evening, the couple was left with a colorful world map, and they finally had a plan to accomplish.
Right from setting up the airline tickets to the accommodation and another basic itinerary, the couple was more or less ready for their epic trip. To make it memorable, David came up with another idea of documenting his travelogues. But wait, it’s not like what you guess. Definitely, not just a blog that would mine some moolah. Rather, he pondered writing a book that would cover all his experiences.
The 10-month Tour and the Route Map
Chile - Ecuador - Peru - USA - Fiji - New Zealand - Australia - Malaysia - Thailand - Cambodia - Vietnam - Myanmar - China - Japan.
The major motto for the enthusiastic couple was to embark on a trip that could take them to multiple adventures, historical tales, cultural delights and what not. Having said that, they never missed anything that came on their way. Also, to stay away from the regular hassle, they had the guides booked in the most of the destinations. After all, that’s one hellish task that consumes a lot of time. Isn’t it?
The moment you hear such tales, adventure rides would be the first thought that would ring in your minds; right? Likewise, David and Helene had some hair-raising fun too. In fact, their adventures can easily be a challenge to a 30-year old couch potato. Right from taking a Hot Air Balloon ride in Myanmar, hiking the gigantic Machu Picchu to Rowing boats in Halong Bay, they never missed to mark some must-try activities off their Adventure Bucket List.
Though the adrenaline rush in their trip played a small role, the couple had a ball covering major travel destinations and at times, also a couple of offbeat ones. Did I say offbeat? Well, David and Helene had the perfect start in that sense. Because, their first destination was Chile and they had a privilege to cover the ancient Moai statues of the Easter Island and also the Atacama desert, which is home to the oldest alien-like mummy.
Moving forward, they also managed to tick other amazing destinations off their Bucket List, which is both rich in culture and heritage. Be it the Uluru Rock in Australia, the Great Wall of China, the volcanic islands of Galapagos, the pagoda shrines of Myanmar or the paradise-esque islands of Fiji and the Great Barrier Reef, the duo never missed to explore the history, wildlife, and food across all the places they covered.
Besides all the adventure and exhilarating schedule, the couple had enough room for fun time. From dancing in the streets of Peru, celebrating Christmas in Sydney to understanding the Indo-Chinese culture in Myanmar, the travel duo took away loads of memories to cherish in the years to come.
While some people dart their retirement dreams by watching television, gardening plants and taking care of their grandkids, David and Helene have indeed set up some goals for everyone to ponder. I’ve got no idea about you amigos; but for me as a 20-year old something, this is gotta be an inspiration.
By the end of the trip, David and Helene were perhaps the happiest retired souls. Not because they could fancy a great compound interest. But, in fact, lived hundreds of memories that can’t be replaced by millions of dollars.
AND, for David, it was a double jackpot accomplishment. Apart from traveling with his wife across the globe, he also managed to mark off another Bucket List by penning down a book based on his 10-month tour.
In the book, which is named as ‘Turning Left Around the World’, David shares all the adventures, laughter, and some inspiring anecdotes of his trip which for sure, has already fetched him a thousands of smiles.
The idea is simple. You can’t afford to lose your glorious ‘present’ to an unpredictable ‘future’. If you’ve got a similar Bucket List like David and Helene, just take the plunge and live your life to the fullest.
