Were you aware that Coorg is the largest producer of coffee in the country? A quaint district nestled in Karnataka, Coorg, is a popular hill station visited by people from all over the country each year. While the nearest airport to this destination is Mangaluru International Airport, Coorg is connected to major cities of South India like Bengaluru, Mysore and Chennai by a vast network of roads.

On one such hot sunny days of June, we decided to take a short trip to Coorg from Bengaluru. Coorg is at a distance of almost 250 kms from Bengaluru and takes around 5 and a half hour to reach. There are a number of good food joints on the way to Coorg like Shivalli MTR, Adigas, Empire, western terrain coffee roasters and Kamat Upachar.

We had planned to stay in Coorg for 2 nights and had booked a beautiful resort called Meriyanda Nature Lodge for the same. The road to Coorg from Bangalore is very beautiful lined with Coconut trees and wide roads. The resort is one of the best in Coorg set amidst 40 acres of coffee plantation and beside Hattihole river and rainforest with view of the Kote Betta mountains. It is situated 20 kms away from the Coorg main town which makes the stay unique. Away from the hustle bustle of the city, it gives you an opportunity to slow down and breathe! The stay costed us INR 13000 per night a room, all meals included. There is complimentary WiFi access in the restaurant and all common areas. All you need to do is, get the password from the reception at the time of Checking In

On reaching the resort, we were quite impressed with their gracious hospitality. We were offered welcome drinks and given a quick tour of the property before being led to our rooms. The property has only luxury wooden cottages and villas stilted and perched high above the ground, each with a beautiful view from their private balcony. The rooms had large glass panelled windows which provided a panaromic view of the nature.

After a quick change of clothes, we went to their open air dining area for lunch. The property follows a strict anti buffet policy and serves you customized preferred cuisine at your table. For lunch we opted for north Indian meal consisting of chicken curry, chapattis, rice, salad ,mixed veg , dal, prawns fry and a dessert. The ingredients used in the food was fresh and the brownies were out of the world.

In the evening we were served fresh Coorg coffee with home made bhajjis. Since it was raining, we spent the evening in the resort itself watching the sunset , playing some card games before heading for dinner. We had ordered Chinese for Dinner which was also very good. Dinner was followed by some delicious coconut barfis. The resort also organizes barbeque on demand but we had to skip that due to the rains.

The next day was fortunately a bright sunny day and after breakfast, we headed off for some local sightseeing to the Kote abbe falls. The falls was at a distance of 3.4 kms from our resort and was indeed very beautiful and worth a visit. We had some hot maggi in a shop beside the falls.

The same night we had ordered for some local coorgi cuisine for dinner and we absolutely loved it. Dinner consisted of Akki roti, Rice ball, bamboo shoot pachdi, veg kurma and coorgi chicken. The next day we had a hearty breakfast before heading back!

The USP of Meriyanda Nature Lodge is that it caters to both, the hardcore nature enthusiast, and the Indian family travellers. The only shortcomings, that we felt were/was that there was no room service .So you need to carry some snacks just in case you get hungry at wee hours! Apart from this, everything else was spot on. The rooms were extremely spacious, the food was sumptuous and the staff were friendly and helpful.
