A recent survey had revealed that India witnessed significant increase in number of solo travellers in last one year. Hospitality chain Oyo’s data has shown about 133% in bookings made by solo travellers in December 2018, as compared to same time in 2017. The bookings were majorly for cold destinations.

From rejuvenation activities to discovering oneself, India has seen a significant increase in solo travellers — including female travel enthusiasts.

Klook, another travel site recorded an increase of from 22% in 2017 to 16% in 2018. Major destinations that managed to attract tourists remained Thailand, Dubai, and Singapore.

Both companied admitted that the numbers consisted of solo travellers as the trend is on a rise. Quite naturally, millennials are seeking ‘alone time’ and the trend is increasing year after year.

Burhanuddin Pithawala, VP Growth and Conversions, OYO, told Business Insider: “We believe that this could be a result of various factors like need to spend quality ‘me time’, flexibility at work where individuals are allowed to work remotely as well as the ease of booking hotels across geographies at the push of a button.”

More women are taking solo trips

Google trends for 2017 suggest that nearly 10 million women searched websites for solo travel. According to ministry of statistics and programmes, half of domestic solo travellers in India are women.

A survey by another making travel booking site booking.com revealed that half of India’s population said that they are willing to go solo this year. This accounts to 18% more than global travellers.

“The trend will continue to grow across demographics and will not be limited to a particular gender or age group.” said Ritu Mehrotra, Country Manager at Booking.com.

A survey by Klook said the tours and activities market of travel industry is expected to touch $183 billion by 2020.
