MUMBAI MAHALAXMI DHOBI GHAT.
Abutting the tracks on Mahalaxmi suburban railway station stands the 140 year old open laundry which Lonely Planet magazine calls 'MUMBAI's biggest human powered washing machine...'
Spread over 22 acres the iconic dhobi ghat sees the washing of thousands of kilograms clothes on 1026 open troughs.
The view from the bridge across the tracks is panaromic. You can go down and walk through but for a fee collected by locals. Photographers say it is worth it.
I went there around ten in the morning and was content with shooting from the bridge.
Early mornings are ideal because you can click the furious, fast paced and rhythmic rinsing and washing of clothes.
With talks of 'redevelopment'in place, this landmark too may soon vanish. Take a look before development gobbles this space.
