We started our trip on Jan 27th 2018. We had booked a Indigo flight directly to Ahmedabad at around 2 30pm. We reached Ahmedabad around 5pm. We had night bus to Bhuj that day. So for spending rest of the time, we headed to alpha one mall which is the biggest mall in Ahmedabad. It has all the branded shops, clean rest rooms and nice restaurants and food court. So we could do nice time pass and started to Paldi bus stand at 9 30pm for boarding our bus to Bhuj. In the mall, my son also enjoyed Segway and 7D adventure movie.

Our bus from Swaminarayan travels was good. Blankets and pillows were provided. We had nice sleep on the bus to start fresh the next day.

Our next 2 days was booked with Ramji and his travels. We had swift desire vehicle for our next 2 days.

We were looking for a non-touristy place before heading to the famous touristy rann utsav and thus involved a lot of research. Finally I got a blog in tripoto from where we got in contact with a local guide Ramjibhai Meriya (9825968216).

The driver arranged by Ramji picked us from Bhuj. We freshened up in a small hotel before heading to our first destination which is a unique village named Nirona.

Day 2

When you’re on a holiday in Kutch, one thing that you really shouldn’t miss is exploring a few local art forms. And the best way to do that is by visiting a few local villages of Gujarat to witness their arts first hand. The experience of shopping local art after seeing how its done with all the effort and practice behind it simply takes the shopping experience to the next level. This village, NIRONA is famous for ROGAN art which a free hand way of drawing , so great that one of the practicing art families painting was gifted by India's prime minister Narendra Modi to President Obama of USA during his visit. Further Nironas copper bell making art with bells which ring the tune so melodious that you cant resist buying one!! Also, there is art of making wooden spoons covered with colorful lac is very attractive. All these arts are showcased with lived demonstrations that leave you spellbound. You may have all the money to buy all these artifacts but what touches these locals is the appreciation you offer them while you shop from them!!

Craftspeople really deserve our respect. They make beautiful things, spend hours over perfecting them, and then we carry them with us and make it part of our homes and our lives. It’s an intrinsic part of our travel memories. I’ve always collected things from my travels. They were not only reminders of my time traipsing through remote villages and towns experiencing local life, but also my way of supporting local artistry, in whatever small way I was capable of.

We had nice lunch at Ramjis property and enjoyed some relaxed time in his vast property.

Evening we went to Ekal ka Rann and small temple of Ekal Mataji. Temple was known for sweet water drinkable natural water spot before earthquake which went 8000 ft below after earthquake it seems. It seems Ramji was arranging food in this temple for his guests few years back when he had nothing much.

Ekal ka Rann is smaller version of the famous salt desert located near Ekal temple and hence known as Ekal ka Rann. This place is less touristy and hence you have to the place all to yourself. We enjoyed taking lot of photos and walking on salt desert. It was like walking on hard salt. We went walking as far as we can :) We enjoyed sunset and sat there till 7 30pm to enjoy the moon light. It was 3 days before full moon light. Its a very different experience being on white blanket below and blue sky above with moon and stars lightening the whole area.

We stayed this night in Meriya Nature Resort which has been developed by Mr. Ramjibhai Meriya along with his family. Located far away from commercialized tourism complex of Rann Utsav. It’s situated very near to the Ekal ka Rann (wellknown landmark – Ekal Mandir) Advantage here is you get a vast expanse of Rann all for yourself. The Owner, Mr Ramjibhai, is a local Doordarshan correspondent, brilliant photographer with excellent knowledge of wildlife which is quite unique to this desert habitat. He will take you to the Rann for Day long trips to the Rann . He also organizes wildlife photography camps but in a different period. This is an eco resort, run exclusively on Solar Energy i.e no electricity. BEWARE! there will be no internet/WiFi and only basic amenities in the room. A solar powered bulb will be provided in the room for night. We are not sure if there is hot water facilities. Also no blankets, towels, toiletries are provided. Please enquire him about facilities before booking since he is doing hard work to improve it day by day.

Anyways stay here has to be about the experience not luxury. It has options of cottages as well as tent camping. Lots of trees and open space enjoy the rural life and experience the nature. You wake up to a beautiful sunrise, sounds of rare birds, peacocks wandering around and to sleep beneath a moonlit sky. The food is strictly vegetarian and the typical Kutch food (Khichdi, homemade khakra, moong sabji, pickles etc.).

We stayed in cottage. It was a different experience very close to nature. Ramji explained us how his family survived after massive earthquake of Bhuj. We appreciate efforts of Ramji to develop this beautiful place of ekal ka rann and wish him good luck to improve his resort with much more facilities for tourists.

Day 3

We went to the beach city Mandvi today. Once a famous port and now an important tourist attraction in Kutch, Mandvi is one such place where one can expect sea, sand and sun. Mandvi is an old port town that has beaches, horse and camel rides along the shore.

First stop was Shyamji Krishna Varma Memorial. Shyamji Krishna Varma was born on 4th October, 1857 in Mandvi town of Kutch district of Gujarat. He was one of the foremost freedom fighters in the history of the freedom movement of India with high sense of patriotism and selfless service for the nation. He had organized a revolutionary center in "India House" at London and propagated the cause of India’s independence through his writings in his publication journal called The "Indian Sociologist". The Memorial’s objective is to pay tribute to the contribution of Shyamji Krishna Varma and also to educate the young generation about those great Indians who sacrificed everything for the country’s freedom.

The memorial has a replica of the famous India House, a library and a research centre to study the contributions of Shyamji Varma and other great revolutionaries to the country's freedom movement. Moreover, it also has on display paintings of the famous Indian revolutionaries which have been painted by some of the renowned artists. The urns containing the ashes of the great freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma and his wife Bhanumati Krishnavarma are kept in the Smriti Kaksh of the Memorial.

Next stop was Vijay Vilas Palace which was built in 1929 by Rao Vijayrajji, this palace is very well-maintained, and often the scene of filming for Bollywood productions. It was built of red sandstone in the Rajput style, with a main central dome, Bengal domes at the sides, bastions at the corner, and colored glass windows. The main attraction is the balcony at the top which affords a superb view of the surrounding area, and the king's tomb can also be seen.

We also saw a pair doing their pre-wedding shoot here. I can imagine awesome photos of them as prince and his wife in the royal palace.

Day 2

The beach looked quite dirty and hence did not enter inside. But we enjoyed camel and horse riding here. We also tried quad bike ride on the sand and enjoyed coconut water and corn watching the waves and the sun set.

Our driver after Mandvi sightseeing dropped us to click hotel which we had booked since its just next to bhuj railway station from where our package for Rann utsav was starting.

This hotel is luxury hotel with good attached restaurant. It was very convenient to stay here.

Day 3

Our package for rann utsav started with pick up from bhuj railway station. They have nice tents for tourists to wait with attached washrooms too. Good arrangement.

We boarded our bus to tent city at 10 30am. Travel time was approx 2 hrs. We were all excited to visit the tent city and the great rann of kutch.

During these four festive months, a temporary but the largest tent city in India, is setup near Dhordo village about a kilometre away. Sprawling across 5,00,000km on the white salt, it takes over two months to setup the 400+ tents, dining halls, recreation areas, stages for live performances, exhibitions, stalls and gear for adventure activities. The tents are of various sizes and styles arranged in form of incomplete circles making for a beautiful bird’s eye view during aerial adventure sports.

Hiralaxmi Craft Park... A vision to preserve, restore and promote the arts of Kutch and making them accessible to masses. Handicraft village where live artisans can be seen working.

As per itinerary, first day we went to White Rann to witness sunset by bus and also some distance by camel cart. It was magical as though we are in moon. You will forget who you are and where you are in this magic of nature. It was fun to walk in swampy sand like salt desert.

It seems thousands of years back due to massive earthquake sea bed got raised and this huge salt desert got created. Water still accumulates here during rainy season and hence only accessible during winters.

After sunset we came back to tents, had dinner and enjoyed cultural activities. Due to full moon, they had arranged for another visit to white desert to witness full moon at white salt desert. We started at 10 30pm and reached white Rann again. This full moon night cannot be captured in any of the cameras. You have to be there and just witness it. Its definitely a wow wow feeling at the lap of nature :)

Day 4

Next day morning we went again to white rann to witness sunrise :) Again you have to be there and just witness it. Below photos are not at all making justice to the experience.

Later we enjoyed leisure shopping at tent city. After lunch we headed to Kalo dungar. It seems before independence when pakistan and India was one country, people of kutch crossed white rann by walk and reached pakistan to do some sales and while returning back from far, this place called Kalo Dungar looked like black dot from white rann and hence the name "The black hill". We enjoyed the views and sunset and also camel ride to the top.

Later we enjoyed dinner and cultural activities and again went to witness our last full moon view at Rann of Kutch of this trip of course!!.

Day 5

The last day of our rann utsav package was bhuj sightseeing with short visit to Bhujodi before dropping back to Bhuj railway station.

Our first stop was Shree Swaminarayan temple.

Next visit was a small village called Bhujodi. It has the Vande Mataram Memorial and Hiralaxmi memorial craft park. This craft park was established to preserve and promote the art of Kutch that was disappearing due to the lack of the financial support to artisans.

We reached Ahmedabad by train from Bhuj. Pratyush enjoyed his first Indian railways journey. He enjoyed the views and finally slept in middle berth. In Ahmedabad, we stayed at fab hotel oriental residency near Ellisbridge. It is an apartment converted into hotel. It was spacious and comfortable. Food was tasty. Breakfast was not buffet but was good.

The last day of our trip was Ahmedabad sight seeing. We started with Gandhi Ashram. I think I will not tell anything about this place since we have read a lot about Gandhiji in our academics.

We also went to Adalji step well.

We ended our day at Aksharadham in Gandhinagar. Same as other Aksharadham sites, mobile and any other elctronic items were not allowed inside. It has first ever vedic water show after sun sets. Musical fountain and laser show on vedic theme. Our show was the story of 9 year old Nachiketa. Photography was not allowed here :(

We came back to Bangalore with lots of memories of Kutch.

This was our visit to the largest district - Kutch.

I have to agree with Sir Amitabh Bachans statement - Kutch nahi dekha tho kuch nahi dekha!!

The hardworking people, their handicrafts, natures wonder - Rann are worth to be experienced!

Ending my long blog here. See you all until my next trip! stay tuned :)
