Excited about Kolkata ?

Myself also while writing about My weekday travel to kolkata.

Discovering the home country India , finding the hidden gems before seeing the Great pyramid of Giza, Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio and many more around the country.

Okay! Let's start without any further waiting.

You can also read my Rishikesh post here.

Every city has something special

The Day

The day started on Tuesday early in the morning.

Before flying to kolkata from Delhi, I reached at least 3hrs before the departure. Damn! Because it's my first-time in flight (Excitement) and I don't want to end up on a late side. Very early and waited, waited, and waited and finally it's the departure time.

I reached kolkata at 11:40a.m. and had left from Delhi at 9:30. am.

I have already booked my Room at Bhowanipore , which is approx. 25kms from Airport .

After reaching at room the first thing I did is left my bag and went for exploration, straight away! The hot sun kept pointing on me and made me full of sweat.

Victoria Memorial

The 1 st day plan was to go and see nearby places. So, the first place on the list is Victoria Memorial which is about 2 km from the hotel and at a walk-able distance. It is built to commemorate Queen Victoria. The hall is well maintained and it's beautiful both from outside and inside with a garden all around enhancing its overall beauty.

Howrah Bridge

I also made a mind to got to Howrah bridge the same day, the world's busiest bridge. There is no stopping in between the traffic is on a continuous roll. Before steeping on the bridge if you are coming from the south end of Howrah Bridge there is a Malik Ghat flower market, very famous towards your left.

The 1 st day ended up with Mishti Doi.

Next Morning

The Next Morning started early and so does kolkata people start their work early and always disciplined. The youngsters here are passionate about Football, in the evening at every alternate street you can witness some children playing football here in old city of kolkata.

Indian Museum

The Morning I went early to the Indian Museum, which is in Park street (Jawaharlal Nehru Road) by taking a Kolkata Metro from Nehru Bhawan station is just 2 stations away from Park Street and in between Maidan station. The Metro is still the old-fashioned which I really liked but the crowd is same as in Delhi Metro though! by the way I am also disciplined, I reached there at 9:30a.m. and the museum timings are starting from 10a.m.

The Museum looks Damn! Like some Hollywood set for me, never seen a museum like that which is founded in 1814 which is the earliest and largest in the Indian subcontinent.

The Museum has the collection of Arts globally covered -

Coin Gallery Mammal Gallery Paintings Gallery Textile Gallery etc. I have never seen a museum like this before.

Park Street

Park street of kolkata is like a Connaught place of Delhi, you will find everything from eateries to clothing at this area with the pubs and clubs also. Most popular for shopping.

You can also find hotels here, if anyone wants a room at this area you can find it and if you want to discover kolkata then -

Esplanade Bhowanipore (most welcome). Also, these areas have popular attractions among tourists. New Town

I have seen Eden Gardens from Outside but there is no permit to go in. Watching a cricket stadium from inside is still in the list in future, will try though !

Princep Ghat

Located between the Water gate and the St. George's Gate of the fort Williams and near to the New bridge of kolkata.

From New Bridge or say from Princep ghat I walked along many Ghats like Babu ghat in between and reached Howrah bridge and my phone showed that I have walked for approx. 4km, and on that particular day a total of 12kms and this is the thing I talked about in my previous post Test your feet is the best way to see the unseen. It's one more round of the iconic Howrah bridge of kolkata.

If you go a bit further from Howrah bridge you will see the Howrah railway station.

Next Day

City Centre 2

City Centre 2 is a mall in the New Town. I checked out from my hotel in bhowanipore and had a plan to explore India's largest park Eco Park but because of timings I first went to City Centre mall which is about 20kms away from my stay.

Eco Park

India's largest park Eco park.

I have reached again early in Eco Park.

The timings are -

For Summers

For Winters -

But, check once again when you are visiting, otherwise this is currently the timings.

The price for the ticket is 30 bugs.

When I entered, don't know where to go it has 3-4 directions. I checked on the map and I wanted to go to the island. Yes, you heard it right the Eco park of kolkata has an Island inside the park. The Park is spread along 480 acres and 104 acres of water body and then inside there's an island.

The park is so huge that it took me 3hrs to take a complete one round, exploring step by step. This hidden island is still unknown to the majority of the people. You can take a boat ride and can reach to the island.

The Park is so neat and clean and well-developed and its amazing location will make you fall in love with this Eco Park of kolkata.

After Exploring the whole park, it's now time to leave and catch the flight from kolkata Airport.

The Weekend travel to kolkata for the first time turned out to be a memorable one. I hadn't expected these moments from my kolkata trip.

But as we say "every city has some surprises for you" And that's it from the land of babu's , the city of joy - The kolkata.
