We were seated in a #Apatani House in Hong Basti, #Ziro, #ArunachaPradesh where the month long #Myoko #festival is taking place. We were admiring a Chicken coop outside one of the houses when a man appeared from inside the house and invited us in. At first we were hesitant but in Hindi he said that we must come inside and meet the family. Once inside, his sister in law, welcomed us to sit around the fire and offered us a glass of millet home brewed wine and a packet of alkaline salt that they make at home. It is customary for them to offer tiny packets of this alkaline salt got from burning certain leaves and soaking it in water to their guests visiting the festival. We all had a discussion along with the man's mother on how intake of this salty alkaline powder has prevented the tribe from getting Goiters and other such symptoms that are common to people who don't have access to iodine commonly found in salt in their diet. Meeting the locals give you a deeper experience of the age-old lifestyles of the #tribe and their transition to a more contemporary one.
