The beauty of North East India is legendary. Tales of rootbridges, and dense vegetation, in a land cut off from the mainstream civilisation have always allured us. We plan to head there this December to explore this magical land of Meghalaya, with an extension visit to the gorgeous Kaziranga National Park. Adventure beckons and you should jump at the opportunity.
The land offers a colourful rural landscape with the Mishing tribes and local food of Jadoh. Be it exciting urban experiences in Shillong, with a game of Teer, a walk through the chaotic Burra Bazaar, grooving to the nightlife of Shillong, a whole day trek to the double root bridge in Cherrapunjee, we’ve covered it all.
So much to do. So many experiences to soak in.

Living Root Bridges are unique live bridges found only in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The secondary roots of a species of Indian Rubber Tree Ficus Elastica- are trained over 20-25 years to form these living bridges to cross fast flowing rivers and streams. Some of these bio-engineering wonders are 53 feet, 70 feet, 100 feet long. The Double Decker Root Bridge has two levels. They are very strong, can carry many people at a time and perhaps can last 500 years.
The trek passes through some verdant slopes, criss crossed by streams. At some places the stream has made some natural ponds, containing emerald blue water where you can take a dip. The trek is moderately difficult since one need to descend 2000 feet into the valley and then climb up the same altitude again.
