Kesariya Balam is a popular Rajasthani folk song originally sung to welcome to Rajput Warriors returning home after years of fighting wars away from their homes. This song is symbolic of the warmth with which Rajasthani people welcome visitors.

Whenever I think of Rajasthan, I think of colors - the myriad colors of the cities, the monuments, the songs and dances, the costumes, the homes, and ever the food - which appeals as much to the eye as it does to the taste buds.

Jaipur - A Welcoming Pink

Day 1

Spend 3 days exploring in and around the city.

Photo of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India by LonelyCanopy_Art&Travel

From Hawa Mahal to Albert Memorial, from shopping in the walled city to watching a play in Jawahar Kala Kendra, there is a lot to do in this vibrant city.

Sahu Ki Chai

A walk in the walled city is incomplete without tasting this tea which has been attracting locals and tourists alike from 1968. Noone knows the secret ingredient, but the flavor does attribute most of its uniqueness to the deftness of preparation and coal fire.

Day 2

Amer Fort - Opulent Red and White

Photo of Amer Fort, Amer Road, Char Darwaja, Amer, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India by LonelyCanopy_Art&Travel

The village of Amer is near Jaipur city, in fact you can see the Amer fort from the city and it is a quick 30 minutes drive from the center. Amer fort is huge, with four courtyards, and rich architecture and paintings everywhere. It is worth spending an entire day here. Locals also frequent the Shila Mata temple situated within the premises.

Laung Ke Sev of Amer - A Delicious Yellow

Photo of Padharo Mhare Des - The Essence of Rajasthan, A 12 Day Itinerary #rajasthaninphotos by LonelyCanopy_Art&Travel

Just next to the steps where one starts the rather easy climb to Amer Fort, there are old shops selling prasad(mawa) and a variety of sev and pickles. The quintessential Amer Sev is a thick long variant with spicy flavors of local red chilly and garlic. The place is frequented by monkeys and an elephant shed nearby(elephant rides to Amer are common) so this presents a colorful scene full of noise and activity.

Day 3

Abhaneri Stepwells and Haunted Bhangarh Fort - A Day Trip From Jaipur

Photo of Bhangarh Fort, Bhangarh, Rajasthan, India by LonelyCanopy_Art&Travel

You'll reach Bhangarh post lunch. Walking up to the fort and exploring the places will take about 2 hours.

Photo of Padharo Mhare Des - The Essence of Rajasthan, A 12 Day Itinerary #rajasthaninphotos by LonelyCanopy_Art&Travel

The fort is actually surrounded by an entire city, which makes up for a good 2km walk, and more if you choose to explore the monuments individually. With closed to 90 minutes on our hands we walked up until the main fort and admired the structures. There was no scare as such, but the sense of shadows and foreboding stories attached to the place was something you can't forget easily.

See the sunset in this haunted spot and then drive back to Jaipur in time for dinner.

Longewala - Crimson with the Courage of Indian Soldiers

Day 7

The next day, while returning from the sand dune camp, we visited Longewala town.

It will take you about 2 hours 30 minutes to reach Longewala, via Ramgarh Road. We paid our jeep driver 1000 rupees extra to see this place on the way back from Sam Sand Dunes to Jaisalmer city.

On the way to Jaisalmer, stop to pay your respects at the Tanot Mata temple. Legend has it that during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Pakistani Army dropped over 3000 bombs targeting the temple but not even one exploded!

Believers tie a handkerchief here while praying for a wish to come true. When their wish is granted, they return and remove the handkerchief.

Longewala is a border town in the Thar Desert in the western part of Jaisalmer district, and is the location of the Battle of Longewala during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Day 12

Next day set out for a longer drive to Lake Jaisamand, which has quite a few records going for it in its little Lake Club. The drive is one of the best in Rajasthan. You don’t normally associate such greenery with the arid lands of the state.

Stop at Santosh Bhojanalaya for a traditional Dal Bati lunch. The food is minimalistic and nice with some local touches to the famed Rajasthani offering.

The last stop on day 12 is Monsoon Palace, also known as Sajjan Garh Palace (thanks, Wikipedia). An immensely high palace, which offers a panoramic view of the city and its lakes.

After the long drive and sightseeing, return to Udaipur city. Plan for a late night bus or train to Jaipur. If you have some time to spare, return to Jaipur on day 13 instead. You will have one leisurely day to relax, do some last-day shopping, and just soak in the sights of Udaipur.

Rajasthan is indeed a wonderland. Plan a trip to explore its magical towns and take a dip into history.
