Day 1

If you crave nature from time to time like I do, Himachal Pradesh is waiting for you with its arms wide open. Nothing can match the pleasant breeze and the roar of a river running parallel to the road as you drive your way up a hill with greenery on both sides. That breath of fresh air and the serene silence often broken by chirping of birds can make you forget all your blues.

Prashar Lake lies 49km north of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India, with a three storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to the sage Prashar.

Surface elevation: 2,730 m

The temple is unique in it's architecture and design; while the lake shares it's own charm in the mystery of the floating island, which by the way accounts for 29% of the area of the lake where as the water accounts for an approximate 71% which is more or less the same percentage division of land and water, as is recorded for the whole planet. And folklore suggests, after the Kurukshetra / Mahabharat war, Pandavas were returning with Lord Kamrunag. When they reach this place, Kamrunag loves the tranquil surroundings and decides to live here forever. So, Bheem (the strongest of the lot) rams his elbow on one of the mountains and creates a big dent in the land. This dent became parashar lake.

If this doesn't keen you enough, the island in the lake is not static but changes its position within the lake and drifts slowly ( or if your lucky, not so much) from one end of the lake to the other. Some tourists claim to have seen the island in motion and there is no specific explaination for how this happens, how the island floats or even how deep the lake is?

Now that I have your interest peeked, let me give you more reasons to not miss an opportunity to be here:

1) The serenity of silence, not the kind that scares you but the kind that calms your soul, just draws the city dwellers towards it.

2) It's not a tourist place that is well known so you get to forget the hustle of the ever so crowded metropolitans.

3) Climb a near by cliff with a pack of beer and enjoy the sun set before your eyes between the fading layers of mountains. Trust me, there ain't no feeling better than that feeling!

4) Get yourself a steaming hot plate of spicy Maggi and enjoy the breeze that flows through your hair (and soul)!

5) Friendly environment: Talk to the local people, they have a lot of stories to tell. You learn so much about the place and life in general.

6) You get to feel like you are over the clouds, which you are. You will feel like you are on top of the world when you see even the clouds are below you.

7) Saved the best for the last, more than the destination.. you will enjoy the journey up to this place, especially if you visit during the months of June and July when the weather there is not too cold nor is it too hot.

HAPPY TRAVELLING!
