The best stop for every wanderlust’s out there. Once known as ‘Pokkumoosapuram’, this bucolic island was later named as Poovar by Marthanda Varma; the ‘Lion of Kerala’, which locally translates to River of Flowers’.

The main attraction of Poovar is – the backwater river, Lake and Arabian sea joining together, which, one will not get to see easily. Poovar beach starts where the backwater ends.

Enveloped in serene Kerala backwaters, flanked by the Arabian Sea on the East and the majestic towering Ghats to the West, opening out to the ocean and a dream golden beach, Poovar Island is a tropical paradise. Swaying coconut palms, endless golden sands, the ultramarine of the ocean, emerald backwaters, crimson sunsets and lush green vegetation create a magical ambience around you.

Poovar is a small coastal, fisherman village located 35 Kms from Trivandrum and 20 Kms from Kovalam. It is surrounded by river called Neyyar. Neyyar River – It originates from Agastyarkoodam Hills near Trivandrum and after 56 Kms of flowing its long journey ends at Arabian Sea. During heavy monsoon, it carry sand and mud and an estuary is formed which become the present form of Poovar. It’s is one of the cleanest beach ever seen. The main attraction of Poovar beach is its golden coloured sand. The beach is idle for swimming only.

Poovar Backwaters:

The Poovar Island is surrounded by small canals and Neyyar river. This rivers and backwaters are rich in flora and fauna. The other side of the river has sandy beach and those who want to visit the Beach from the resort need any means of water transport which is generally called Speed boat or wooden motor boat. The speed boat will take approximately 1.5 / 2hrs to cover backwater trip, which accommodate 6-7 adults. Average cost of these private operated boats is Rs 3000 for one boat. If the demand is high, the rates also go up.

While cruising though the Poovar backwaters one can easily spot various water birds like Kingfisher, Cormorant , Darter , Egrets , Kite , Sea eagle and much more

Beach Visits: Located within a proximity to Trivandrum, Poovar offers easy access to a number of stunning beaches in Kerala. Interestingly, most of these beaches are located within a radius of 30km.

Historical Tours: This bucolic fishing village is dotted with many historical sites. With the oldest site dating back to Neolithic Age, visitors can explore several other such prominent historical landmarks while in Poovar

Vizhinjam International Seaport: This Seaport is a gorgeous place to visit while in Poovar. Located only 13km from the island village, this seaport is a flagship tourist destination that experiences a huge influx of ships from several national and international destinations.

Kovalam Beach: For the beachgoers, they can make it to the gorgeous Kovalam Beach while unravelling the miraculous beauty of Poovar. Being 17km away from the village, this beach could be the most wonderful spot to romance the golden sands while being soaked with the gracious charm of the Arabian Sea!

Neyyattinkara: A balmy locality in Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara is a famous tourist destination that dates back to the Neolithic Age. Once called ‘Thenganad’, this township is the abode of the pious NeyyattinkaraSree Krishna Swami Temple.

Shankumugham Beach: Located on the western rim of Trivandrum, Shankumugham Beach is an extremely scenic and equally serene beach in the entire of Kerala. Located around 30km from Poovar, this sandy retreat is an ideal place to relax and rejuvenate one’s senses.

Vizhinjam Cave Temple: Depicting sculpture that belongs to the late 8th century, Vizhinjam Cave Temple is considered as a pious religious centre among the followers of Hinduism. Located only 40 km from Poovar fishing village, this temple is a testimony to ancient art skills and utmost devotion.

Kuthira Malika Palace: The ‘Mansion of Horses’ or the Kuthira Malika Palace in Trivandrum is also among the most remarkable places to visit from Poovar. Built in traditional Kerala architecture, this elegant masterpiece from the past is revered for its intricate wood carvings, distinct pattern, wooden ceilings, and lively floral motifs.
