Located in the Pauri Garhwal district, Rishikesh is a holy town and famous pilgrimage site for Hindus as India’s holiest River Ganga flows through it. Another most revered holy city – Haridwar, is located about 25 km before Rishikesh.

When It All Began

There are so many stories and lovely memories associated with these holy cities of ‘Dev Bhoomi’. I still remember those days when I used to visit these spiritual cities along with my family and cousins during summer break from school. Every year in the month of May or June I use to pack my bag and head towards Haridwar-Rishikesh. Those annual trips initiated my love for travelling. So if you are planning a small weekend getaway to this spiritual town of Uttarakhand, this travel itinerary will help you out in many ways. Let’s begin!

Getting & Staying At Rishikesh

The city of Rishikesh is easily accessible from all parts of the country. I booked UPSRTC AC bus from Paytm which even gave me some cashback.

Once you have reached the peaceful town of Rishikesh, it’s time to look for the stay options. There are a variety of holiday homes, hotels, dharamshalas and ashrams spread across the town to cater the accommodation of large number of travellers. You can stay near Triveni Ghat, Sai Ghat or some accommodations on Dehradun-Rishikesh highway.

Let’s Explore & Eat In Rishikesh

After getting freshened-up, it’s time to explore this divine city of Uttarakhand. You can walk or take a sharing auto (in case your accommodation is far away from the main town) and visit Ram Jhula (also known as Shivananda Jhula).

Other places to visit are Lakshman Jhula, Chotiwala Restaurant, Neelkanth Mahadev MandirBharat Mandir and significant Trayambakeshwar Mandir - a 13 stories high temple, with each storey has several idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Take a boat ride in the sacred water of Ganga from one end to another.

Ganga Aarti, Local Street Food & Shopping

It was evening time and the sacred city was gathering at the famous Parmarth Niketan ashram (Near Ram Jhula) for Ganga Aarti. Another famous Ganga Aarti is held at Triveni Ghat.

Try out the local/street food options near Triveni Ghat market. The best place for shopping in Rishikesh is around Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula. For having breakfast and dinner head to ‘Pandit Ji Ka’ Rajasthani Restaurant located near Triveni Ghat chowk. Dominos is also located in this main market of Rishikesh.

Adventure Capital Of The World

Located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, Rishikesh finds an important place for every type of traveller. Rishikesh is very popular place for all kind adventure activities. From many years I was also planning to experience the thrilling rapids of River Ganga. And guess what? I finally locked my plan to experience Rishikesh like never before.

Our camps were loacted in Ghattu Ghat, on the banks of Heval River (a tributary of Ganga) in the serene valley of Shivalik Himalayas.

Thrilling Rafting Expedition In Ganges

After breakfast we checked out from the jungle camp and headed towards Shivpuri – the second starting point for white water rafting in majestic Ganges. The guides gave us all the safety wears and guidelines to be followed while the rafting expedition. The 16 kms rafting expedition in River Ganga comprised of total 9 rapids of different grades (levels).

Some popular rapids are Shipuri Rapid, Roller Coaster, Return to Sender, Golf Course, Double-Trouble and Club House. The pristine cool and rejuvenating water splashes of Ganga offered an utter delight. Our raft stopped at a beach near Maggie point where we relaxed on the sands for few minutes, clicked some cool pictures and then moved ahead towards the end of this amazing rafting expedition in River Ganga.

The journey came to an end at NIM Beach near Lakshman Jhula. Truly this sacred city of Uttarakhand is an amalgamation of devotion, peace and adventure.
