Kinnaur And Spiti

Photo of Solo Backpacking through Kinnaur & Spiti by Public Transport by Rahul Nanda

In June 2018 I decided to take one of the most ambitious solo trips of my life through Kinnaur and Spiti Valley by public transport. Here is my video diary about the same.

Day 1

On day 1 I travel from Mumbai to Delhi to Narkhanda.

After a flight from Mumbai to Delhi I take the airport express metro to New Delhi station from where I change to the yellow line metro to get to ISBT Kashmere Gate. From there I board a 13 hour bus to Narkhanda.

Day 2

On day 2 to acclimatise to the mountains I did the famous Hatu Peak Trek in Narkhanda.

A moderate trek in the Shimla District that is a total of 14 kms through beautiful pine forests with the Hatu Devi Temple & panoramic views of the Himalayas from the top. A must do trek if you visit Narkhanda.

Day 3

On day 3 I set off early and travel from Narkhanda to Sangla trying to get to the 'Last Village Of India", CHITKUL but failed even after changing three busses and travelling for 9 hours on one of the most mesmerising highways in the world.

Day 4

On day 4 I finally get to and explore Chitkul - The Last Village Of India. Nestled at the end of the beautiful Sangla Valley just a few kms from the Tibet border.

Day 5

On day 5 I explore the Baspa River and Indo-Tibetan border check post in Chitkul before leaving for the headquarters of the Kinnaur district, Reckong Peo.

Day 6

On day 6 of my Kinnaur & Spiti series I explore the magical village Kalpa at the foothills of the Kinner Kailash Mountains & take a scary yet beautiful walk to the Suicide Point in Roghi.

Day 7

On day 7 I take a bus from Reckong Peo to Nako where I explore their 1000 year old monastery, Nako Lake and priceless Himalayan sunset from Padma Chakra view point (One of the hughest points in Nako).

My Kinnaur trip ends here.

Day 8

On day 8 I finally crossover into the Spiti Valley as I travel from Nako to Tabo, where I explore the Tabo Monastery, the oldest monastery in the Himalayas & the buddhist meditation caves. All while staying at the Monastery guest house.

Day 9

On day 9 I travel from Tabo to the old capital of the Kingdom Of Spiti - Dhankar, where I explore the 1000 year old Dhankar Monastery & watch a stunning sunset from the kings fort.

Day 10

On day 10 I trek to the famous high-altitude Dhankar Lake. The trek that is over rocky desert terrain gives you some of the most breathtaking views of the valley before you reach the holy lake!

Day 11

On day 11 of my I travel to the capital of Spiti Valley, Kaza, where I spend an the whole afternoon exploring the place before leaving to stay at the iconic Kee Monastery in the evening.

Day 12

On day 12 of my Kinnaur & Spiti trip I travel from Kee Monastery to Kaza, where I spend the afternoon before leaving for Mudh, the last village in the Pin Valley! A magical village straight out of fairytale!

Day 13

On day 13 I explore Mudh, the last village in the Pin Valley. From walking over streams to crossing wooden bridges & lush green fields you'll see why Mudh became my favourite place in Spiti Valley!

Day 14

On day 14 I do the most popular circuit in the Spiti Valley. I visit the highest village connected by a motorable road (Komic), highest post-office in the world (Hikkim) & the fossil village of Langza.

On day 15 I took a bus from Kaza to Manali bringing to end my Kinnaur & Spiti trip.

Day 15

Pro tip - Book the bus ticket from Kaza to Manali one evening in advance. Only then you will get the ticket. Bus leave at 5 am everyday and no tickets are sold in the morning.

Hope my videos and basic information help you plan your trip. If it did please consider subscribing to my YouTube channel as it helps a lot.
