If you are looking for an offbeat destination from Kolkata near Siliguri, then this place is perfect for you. A beautiful village surrounded by the tea garden on all sides and the river flowing through the village adds a charm to this place. Here, you can take leisurely walks in the tea gardens, listen to the chirping of birds for eternity and can even take a dip in the fresh waters of the Rangbhang River.

The place that I am talking about is Tabakoshi. Just a few kilometers away from Mirik, the village is just at the foothills of the Gopaldhara Tea Estate. The place is still relatively unexplored and is more secluded than the crowded Mirik and Darjeeling.

Tabakoshi is an absolutely delightful place. It is a place where you can simply relax and spent leisurely time amidst the nature. Subhash Ghishing named the place after a river in Nepal by the same name. Tabakoshi is a part of the Gopaldhara Tea estate. The Thurbo Tea estate and the Sangma Tea Estate surround the charming hamlet.

Tabakoshi is also a bird watchers paradise. The chirping of birds can be heard from early in the morning and is a treat to the ears. It is so different and soothing to hear to the sounds of the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves when our ears are so accustomed to the honking sounds of vehicles.

While at Mirik, visit the Sumendu Lake or the Mirik Lake. It is the heart of Mirik. There is an 80 ft (24 m) long footbridge over the lake. You can boat in the lake or take a horse ride around the lake.

You can also visit the Debisthan, a temple located on a hillock near the Sumendu Lake at Mirik and the Mirik Church.

The market is at the Indo-Nepal border and is a thriving market and centre for clothes, electronic goods and household items. You can find very good quality clothes, jackets and shoes at a cheap price if you can bargain well. But on the flip side, you can also get cheated! So think before you take any major shopping decisions here.
