Dholavira is one of the lesser known destinations in Gujarat. I came to know about this place through a colleague who had visited some years back. There are many things unique about this place. For starters, it has one of the most remarkable excavations of the Indus Valley civilization or Harappan culture. It is also the 5th largest excavation in the subcontinent. Situated amidst the island of Khadir, it is one of those places to spot the great Rann of Kutchh, but sans the crowd.

The drive from Bhuj to Dholavira is almost 220 kms and took us through Bhachau and Rapar. It was a long drive, but as we were about to reach, a road came into view which was surrounded on both sides by the salty marshes. It was a beautiful stretch. We decided to spend time here on the way back. Our driver told us about a place where one could see flamingoes, but that place was only reachable by an SUV.

Dholavira has a museum which houses antiquities unearthed from the site. There were signboards which talks about the history of the Indus civilization. There were some brilliant images as well. We hired a guide to give us a tour of the place. The tour gave us an insight into the city of exquisite planning, beautiful monuments, aesthetic architecture and an ingenious water and waste management system. It’s was good to revisit the history chapters from school. It’s also a great place to test one’s photography skills.

On the way back, as decided, we stopped on the highway and walked into the Rann. It was the perfect time, as the sun was just about to set. We walked around for a bit and witnessed an epic sunset. Being in the middle of a highway, it wasn’t possible to park the vehicle for a long time. From there it was a drive to Ahmedabad airport.

Dholavira is definitely one of those remote off-beat destinations which not only delves into history of the Harappan culture, but also lets you have the salty white marshes all to yourself.
