Meet the Gypsy Nesters!
Who are they?
Meet David and Veronica James, a couple who rediscovered their love for each other while travelling the world. They have been travelling for the past 9 years and have covered more than 47 countries across 6 continents and are still counting. After their youngest son moved out they had to face the question 'what now?'.
With most of their family and friends staying far away, they refused to live as empty nesters and this is when they decided to sell off all their possessions and purchased an old RV from eBay to start travelling the world. It wasn’t an easy task though, especially for Veronica, who was used to being a helicopter mom and had to learn to let go of her heartstrings and the place she loved as her home.
Initially, deciding to take just a year off to celebrate their victory over having raised a good family, they learnt that they were loving the experience of rediscovering things that they had loved about each other three decades ago. Sharing experiences and learning new things helped them grow together as a couple. Simple activities like art, cooking and volunteering gave them a lot to talk about. However, it wasn’t a smooth transition and with different travelling styles, they did have their share of initial compromises. While David liked to quickly tick off things on their checklist, Veronica liked to stay and soak in the experiences. Over time and with experiences of meeting new people and making friends all over the travel community, they finally got into a middle ground and started having fun on the way.
While they weren’t exactly bucket listers, they have visited the best of the world in the last few years. From The Great Wall of China to Machu Picchu, paragliding in Peru to snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, they've experienced it all.
How has this helped them?
Always being on the go and living a life filled with excitement has made them relate to their children more. Stepping back and making their own way in the world has made them realise that while they will always be parents, they don’t need to be be parenting anymore.
Over the years they have been popularly talked about on various forums such as Huffington Post and other travel websites This recognition has resulted in their book, 'Going Gypsy: One Couple’s Adventure from Empty Nest to No Nest' to be listed as the #1 seller on Amazon. They are also regularly been invited for events and stays across the world.
So if you have ever dreamt of that perfect retirement, but don't know how to go about it, you need to start following them for travel tips and more on Gypsy Nester
