The best way to explore and soak in the essence of any place would be something which is slow paced, or at least which gives you the freedom to stop at any moment and the liberty to go where your vibes pulls you. If you are a health freak it’s a bonus, because every city is at its best during sunrise and sunset. So here’s the top 3 places to Walk, Run and Cycle in Mysore!

1. Kukkarahalli Lake

Right in the heart of the City it’s R.K Narayan’s favourite place in Mysore! Kukkarahalli was a lake built by Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar in the year 1864 for irrigation purpose. The sunset here is dubbed as “Masterpiece sunset” by R.K Narayan, and you wouldn’t agree more if you are there at the right time. The place is full of life every morning with most of the locals who indulge in Yoga, meditation, and walking. With shaded stone benches and lush green meadows it’s the perfect place for a morning stroll or a evening walk with your loved ones. Bird enthusiasts will have a merry time. The entry is free, but you can only visit it during early morning hours and late evening.
P.S: For the foodies, after some pleasure for the eye and the soul you can head out to relinquish your palate with fish fry right outside the gate. The shop is run by Karnataka State Cooperative Fisheries Federation.

2. Karanji Lake

Karanji Lake or Karanjikere as known by the locals is run by the Mysore zoo. The place is a heaven for nature enthusiasts with the number of flora and fauna found here. No matter what time you visit during the day, you will be welcomed with lots of shade and serenity. It also has India’s biggest walk through aviary with over 17 species of birds. You can choose to take a boat ride around the lake in a pedal boat all by yourself or you can rent electric cycles to move around. The butterfly park is a must see during the season, the lake, flowers and those thousand hues of flutterby will make you go “awww”, unless you are an instagram-shutterbug who would rather click-filter-upload. (No offence fellow instagrammers!)

3. Chamundi Hills

On any given weekend day this is where most number of Mysoreans head to! Be it for burning some calories by running up the 1200 steps at morning or to enjoy the sight of the palace lighting up during the evening. Here you can do it all- you can run, walk or cycle all the way up and be greeted by the Demon king “Mahishasura” (from whom Mysore gets its name). If you choose to cycle all the way up, it’s 6 km to the top but the fun is when you are coming downhill! On reaching the top you can refill your energy with tender coconuts or sip on some hot filter coffee while you watch the locals.
