Reconnect With Nature in This Secluded Rustic Slice of Paradise in Goa

Tripoto

After you've partied hard at one too many clubs in Goa and woken up with consecutive hangovers, the heart craves for some peace and a digestive.

For those looking for a spot of quiet, shrouded in dripping greenery and removed from the din of mainstream Goa, Olaulim Backyards is the answer.

The experience starts right from the drive to the village of Olaulim which winds through hillocks, emerald fields, white churches and gardens. Olaulim Backyards is perched by the Mandovi River's glimmering backwaters with sweeping views of green fields by the river banks.

Built-in typical Goan style, the property breathes in harmony with nature. There are five eco-cottages, all of them with a rustic touch and made out of local elements such as bamboo, stone, coconut wood and palm leaves. Sleep in cool rooms aired by large windows or shower under partly open roofs with views of waving trees.

With a commitment to care for the environment, the property uses solar panels to heat water, composts waste and grows its own fruits and vegetables organically. Animal lovers will adore the number of pets here- four cuddly dogs that loll around the property, three cats, a donkey, a pony and a goat.

The five cottages are named after the birds that can be spotted here-Sunbird, Hornbill, Golden Oriole, Indian Pitta and the Paradise Flycatcher. All cottages are unique and are decorated with antique furniture.

The Sunbird cottage suns itself by the edge of a paddy field and overlooks the river. The Hornbill is built partially in a rock and has a loft in the rock and a small bed. India Pitta is made out of packed earth and has a small garden in the bathroom while the Paradise Flycatcher is built partly with recycled waste and has a balcony to enjoy a cup of coffee on.

Being surrounded by nature certainly whets the appetite and the food here will leave you feeling completely sated. There are fresh vegetables and fruits from the backyard and seafood cooked on a traditional wood-fire. Savio, one of the owners also makes a mean fenny cocktail.

You can also go kayaking in one of their boats, cycle around the village or try your luck at fishing.
