Unplanned trip to Nepal and Manali

Tripoto
Day 1

One of my Dehradun Hostel friend called up on 16th June 2014 and narrated me about his plan to visit Nepal. Without giving a second thought I booked my ticket for Kathmandu from Mumbai and I was on a flight 3 days later with a connecting flight via Delhi. Later on I realized that it was not the plan to visit Nepal that attracted me, the prospect itself of meeting him after so many years had done the conclusive part. Though June is not a good time to visit Nepal as it rains a lot and the atmosphere is always cloudy so u only get to see glimpses of the magnificent snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

While waiting for my connecting flight at Delhi, I actually started planning about things to be done and google come to my rescue. The Last Resort at Nepal-Tibet border topped of my wish list after that quick search. I reached Kathmandu Airport at 5:00pm and my friend along with his 2 friends were already there to pick me up and we decided in the hotel that we will hire two bikes and hit the road from tomorrow towards Pokhara.

Day 2

Quickly after all the negotiation we started our ride towards Pokhara.

We are out from the Kathmandu city

It was around 210 km and the road was good. Riding through magnificent mountains with all the curves and bends makes our ride more fascinating. We even stopped on one of the road side waterfall and took a refreshing bath in the ice cold water which perfectly revived us.

We took a stroll in the Fewa lake area enjoying the good lakeside view. Pokhara is one of the major city of Nepal and trek enthusiast visit this place for a trek to anapurna region.

At night we saw Portugal vs Germany world cup match which Portugal lost badly with Pepe getting a red card and damaging the hope of progressing through group stage. In spite of me being Portugal supporter I could sleep well that night.

After visiting the World Peace Pagoda, the locals informed us that you can further ride up to get a birds view of Fewa lake and Pokhara city with Himalaya in the background. The road was very steep still we managed to reach the top.

After enjoying the view for a while we descended and visit places like Devi's fall, Gupteswar Gupha (Cave), Mahendra Gupha (cave) and Chameri Gupha, The Old Bazaar (Ganesh Tole and Ram Krishna Tole).

Day 4

Next day day we rode to a nearby place called Dhikurpokhari and parked our bike and hiked to a nearby village. The climate was good which make the trek less tiring and we had some good local drinks and food at the village.

By evening again we were back to Pokhara and spent a calm evening near Fewa lake as next day we have to ride back to Pokhara as some emergency camp up and two member from the group were leaving back as some work came up.

Education for peace, progress and service.

Day 5

We started early morning and again the good weather with little bit of drizzling made our ride easy and comfortable.

We returned the other bike a bid to other two member and now I was left only with my friend from hostel. Brothers in crime. Somewhere back long after leaving my hostel life behind I realised that I was able to stand my ground and fight for everything because I had the support of them. The mental advantage of knowing that I have their back and I am their back does the magic and made us do unbelievable stuffs.

We shifted our hotel from Thamel area to Freak Street in a budget hostel accomodation with common bathroom and evening was spent playing cards with the locals in the lobby area of the Guest House.

Day 6

Next day we started early for Nagarkot with awesome sunrise view in our mind and again we were disappointed as it was too cloudy and again June/July is not a good time to visit Nepal.

At the view point at Nagarkot, I met an old Australian who was visiting Nepal again after around 25 years, last time he visited with her wife and again he was on a mission to see how things have changed by re visiting all of his favorite places.

After the disappointing attempt expecting a beautiful sunrise we spent some time in a local eat out place, drinking Raksi (local home made alcohol) and I ended having four aluminium jars of it with meats cooked in local recipe.

After a quick chat with the owner of these cool eat out place who was busy grumbling about that portion of the crowd who complains about the inferior place of his and about the food cooked in his term, we headed towards Bhaktapur. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is aa UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We did started with our journey without a return ticket and my friend got a call from his father directing him to return as soon as possible, so I somehow managed to convinced him for a visit to the last resort for 2 more days for some adventure. from Bhaktapur we headed straight towards Thamel and did our booking for White River Rafting, Rapelling and Bungee jump.

We ended our day at Pashupatinath Temple. Walking by the river side and watching dozens of cremation ceremony did lower my energy level. Many unwanted thought started creeping in my mind which were not in my control. The closing aarti though really works for me driving out all the negative energy restoring faith and hope again. I really don't know what really work out for me but I was really energized seeing people enjoying the moment.

Day 7

Next day we started our ride towards Tatopani near Nepal-China border. After reaching The Last Resort we dumped our luggage in our tent and headed straight for rapelling. The Last Resort is a must visit place for every adventure lover visiting Nepal.

After finishing with the rapelling we rested for a while and again proceeded towards Nepal Chine border on our bike.

Just before entering the border area at the Nepal Custom Office, I was warned by the official not to shoot any picture once we are on the bride. The bridge has been barricaded on halfway as half of it is in Nepal and the other half in China as the river Kosi separates the two nation. I assured them I will not be taking any pictures. The officials in Nepal border were friendly and also alerted us that they might break your camera if you do so as such kind of incident had already happened. Once I was at the bridge and was heading towards the barricading, the chinese army started storming towards the barricading, with proper siren and all, I ran back towards the Nepal side and later on I was informed by the Official at Nepal side that they were just doing their drills.

Day 8

For the night we halted at The Last Resort. The next day we started with a light breakfast and attended the briefing session for the bungee jump. Right after checking from our weights and signing of the waiver form till the jump I was a little pumped up. Just standing at the edge millisecond before the jump it came to my mind why I am doing this?? should I go back??? Then without giving a second thought I just leaped from the edge. After completion of the jump including the rebound, there came a moment of satisfaction for completion of some milestone which stays with me forever and that makes the moment special.

After some relaxation in the resort we were ready again for the White River Rafting.

While making the booking for The last Resort at Thamel we did made arrangement for our return Journey. My friend was leaving for Guwahati from Bagdogra Airport and I was leaving for Delhi from Kathmandu as I still have few leave at my disposal so I planned to visit Himachal as I have heard thousand of times from friends about the place.

Day 9

Next day morning when heading for airport, as I was intoxicated and my friend was dropping me on the bike to airport after that he was supposed to return the bike and take a bus for Bagdogra airport . I lost his iphone 5 on the way. While riding his alarm rang up and he took the phone out of his pocket and gave it to me as he was riding the bike. After about 2-3 km when he asked for the phone, I still don't know where did the phone went.

I landed on Delhi airport and as I had planned to visit Himachal with my brother who was arriving a day later so I took shelter on a cheap hotel near Majnu Ka Tilla, visited Humayun's Tomb and after that saw the Epic match between Brazil and Germany. Brazil was badly humilated and outplayed by the Germans.

Day 10

Next day morning my brother arrived and we boarded an evening bus for Manali. By early morning we were strolling in Mall Road, Manali in search of cheap home stay. After dumping our luggage we inquired about hiring of bikes and spent the day in Manali.

In Manali, we visited Van Vihar, Hidimba Temple and after some aimless roaming around we headed towards Solang valley for paragliding.

We finished off the day with sundown as we have to do a lot of movement the next day.

Day 11

Next day with the first ray of light we crank up our bikes and was on our way to Tosh valley. We stopped in between at kullu and visited some temples on the way and again was on our ride. Riding through Himalayas is always fun whether it be through snow-capped mountains, beautiful valleys, rough and unpaved terrain or through unscathed villages, every km has its own worth. I have been there and will definitely going for more.

another milestone completed

We didn't stopped at Kasol neither at Manikaran as our destination was Tosh. After crossing Manikaran after some offroading of aroung 12-13 km we reached tosh. Parked our bike just before the bridge and help ourselves on foot wandering through the village.

After spending some time at the village we started looking for a place to halt the night and once you enter the Kasol region you will feel the change like you have been smuggled to a whole different place.

Next day we visted Mankaran Sahiba Gurudwara on the way back and by night we left Kasol for Manali.

Day 14

After returning to Manali I had home made Parantha and Rest in Peace only for the day though. Next Day after saying gooing bye to the awesame host and her old yet energetic mother, I started towards Mumbai as I was without a return ticket I somehow managed to reach Ambala Cantt and booked a general ticket for all the way to Mumbai.
