Trip to Kenya/Maasai Mara

DAY 1

The whole day was essentially being crammed in a car in traffic (thank you Bangalore) and then on tw0 flights. But when the destination is Sarova Stanley, then there is no room for any complaints. The hotel is gorgeous and has all the amenities you can think of. There are three restaurants and an exchange bar. The staff are very sweet and helpful. Spent the day exploring the hotel and the beautiful room.

(Yes, the hotel is an experience by itself)

DAY 2

Checked out and headed straight to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The drive there is great, you get to see the city end and the grasslands begin. There are many small shops on the side of the road where you can stop to buy or window shop. The Maasai paintings and animal carvings are definitely worth buying back.

I was lucky enough to catch two cheetahs chase a couple of wildebeats right at the entrance of the Reserve. And the rest of the drive t0 the hotel, Mara Keekorok Lodge. The lodge is located at the heart of the reserve with no barricades or walls. It was so exciting to know that I could wake up in the morning and on the other side of the glass door could be a giraffe, a zebra or god forbid, a lion.

Day 3

After checking in and having a great lunch, we headed into game reserve. I got to see so many zebras, giraffes, a whole wide range of birds, and a lioness. The night was pleasant, and the food spread at the lodge is truly great. Vegetarians will have no issue at all. There are tons of options.(They serve Indian food too!)

Morning, post breakfast, we head back into the game reserve for the second time. This time we were lucky enough to spot a lioness with her cubs. This was surely the highlight for I have not seen anything cuter than those little cubs trying to climb on top of their mother but failing hence falling down. The ride through the reserve itself is so refreshing for all you can see for miles and miles are vast grasslands. And here and there you can see groups of zebras and wildebeasts grazing and sometimes even a tower of giraffes.

After returning from the drive, I decided to head out for a bit and visit the Maasai Tribal Village. This part was very touching as they explained to us how they live as one with the wildlife and how they are trying to educate their children to speak English in order to improve the conditions they live in. The chief of the tribe was kind enough to let me dress up in their attire and the tribe performed their dance. Allowing the kids to take photographs and spending time with them really gets you thinking. But this is not something that would be a "must check out", if you would like to visit, do buy some candy or just something for the kids.

Taking leave from the people of the tribe and saying good bye to the little ones, I headed back to the lodge. In the evening, we headed out to the reserve one last time and got to watch the sun set over the grasslands. I have seen many sunsets, over various terrains, but I have to tell you, being able to see so much of the sky and the grass reflect the colors of the sunset, it is something else. This time around we got to see two gazelle's fight for their territory. On our way back we spotted a cheetah on top a tree, lazing on a branch and that marked the end of my wildlife hunt. Returned back to the lodge, and enjoyed the fact that I was sleeping in the middle of the reserve. They also had a pond nearby which we were allowed to walk to and there were hippos there. You can spot them from the boardwalk extending from the lodge.

DAY 4

After checking out, headed back to Nairobi and checked back into Savara Stanley. Spent the day looking around Nairobi. It is a very beautiful city. Their government building are all down one road which is heavily guarded and you're not allowed to click pictures, but it is a sight for the eyes.

You can head to the Nairobi Park where you can see the city skyline. There is a market place near the park where I got to shop for very beautiful things.

Then, it was back to the hotel and continue enjoying the gradeur of it.
