November marks the onset of music festivals in the Northeast. However, the latest developments in Meghalaya sing a song about additional paperwork before travellers can actually visit the state. If you, too, are heading to Meghalaya, you will now be required to take the government’s permission. The latest update states that all non-residents visiting Meghalaya for more than 24 hours need to register with the government before the entry is granted.

Who all need permission?

The rule applies strictly to the non-residents of the state. The state’s deputy CM, Preston Tynsong, clarified that the new rules will not affect the residents. He further added that this is done in the best interests of outsiders as well as in the interest of the government and people of Meghalaya. He ensures that this would add to the safety of everyone.

What if you don’t take permission?

Lack of proper documents that grant permission will be treated as a violation of the law. A hefty fine or the chance to enjoy your favourite music show from behind the bars for up to six months is likely to follow.

How to get registered?

Tynsong commented that the procedure will be simple and registrations can be made online as well. The office location or the website for the same has not been announced yet, however. A similar rule already exists where tourists need an Inner Line Permit before they can enter certain parts of Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. As of yet, it is unclear if Meghalaya will follow the same procedures as the Initial Learning Program.

With many festivals lined up in Meghalaya, the authorities are expected to come up with more updates on the issue soon. We'll keep you posted!
