Change is inevitable and it is permeating even the remote and lesser developed regions of the world. We got to witness it on our trip to Ziro for Myoko festival. Some of us had expected the locals to be walking on the streets in their ethnic attires but so was not the case. Most of them were in causal clothes as any of us. Only the older women had nose plugs and tattoos on their face and men tied thier hair in a knot. The younger lot is at par with the rest of the world- no tattoos or nose plugs, the girls go to parlours, kids sing bollywood songs.

But what has still not changed are their homes. They still live in houses made the traditional way- on bamboo stilts, with a central fire serving as a kitchen and to keep warm, with few rooms. Pigs stay in the space between the ground and the house floor levels. Bathrooms are just outside the main residential block. And everyone has symbols to keep the spirits away. And their festivals and ceremonies are still as they always were.
