Sahelion ki Bari

Palaces, forts and tales of valor makes Udaipur a city of vast heritage and culture in the Indian history. Founded by Maharaja Udai Singh II and was once the capital of Mewar. I happen to visit this city of lakes because of my cousin’s wedding, interesting new concept called “Destination wedding”. There are trains from Delhi taking an overnight journey’s time reaching at around 7 in the morning providing a full day to begin with. Some good shopping places are Hati pol and bada bazaar and authentic Rajasthani food can be enjoyed at pretty much every corner of the city. You can find decent rooms at a price of 500 per day if you are on a budget to luxury villas to provide you all sorts of leisure. You will be spoilt with options this city has to offer. I tried to cover as many as I could escaping from the wedding.

City Palace: The largest palace complex in Rajasthan and home to the Maharaja of Udaipur. It has been turned into a Heritage Museum and one can easily feel the royalty standing in the corridors of these halls. A magnificent view of the Palace can be captured from the lake Pichola as well describing its natural essence and beauty.

Sahelion ki Bari: Close to the Fateh Sagar Lake, a collection of beautiful picturesque gardens built for the recreation of the Princess and her 48 maidens. The fountains were a delight to watch and the lush green gardens filled with all kinds of flowers were remarkable.

Sajjangarh Fort: A fort atop the hills overlooking all the lakes. You can get their by a car or unleash your adventure junkie and enjoy a wonderful trekking experience to the fort entrance. You will be able to spot some glorious views of the city and other heritage sites from the fort. I never got the chance to visit the fort but like every Indian fort has, it is also associated with some haunted stories and thus the fort is closed as soon as the sun sets.

Lake Pichola: The Lake is in the heart of the city and provides some breath-taking views of the nearby heritage places and some hotels built around the shores – Udaivilas and Taj Palace tops the list. One should pleasure themselves with a dinner or lunch at the Jagmahal, surrounded by water on all sides. You can spot the Sajjangarh fort from this lake while boating and believe it me it’s worth a sigh.

Lake Fateh Sagar: Don’t get fussy about all the lakes, after all it’s the city of lakes – be it man-made or natural. Here’s one which was built by Maharaja Jai Singh and is around the Rana Pratap Memorial. It is the source to the fountains in Sahelion Ki Bari as well.

Vintage Car Museum: An exhibition of vintage and royal cars of the Maharaja’s depicting their style and lifestyle exhibit 22 splendid vehicles, including a seven-seat 1938 Cadillac complete with purdah system, the Cadillac convertible that whisked Queen Elizabeth II to the airport in 1961, and the beautiful 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom used in the Bond film Octopussy.

And if you still get time to spend, I would recommend visiting the nearby forts from Udaipur like the Kumbhalgarh fort and the Chittorgarh fort, about a day's trip from this city but the forts you will see are huge and one of the biggest in India. These can be covered in a private taxi in a day's time.

The city is a sea of experiences and tales one can create like pearls and bind them together in a necklace of memories to cherish for a lifetime. The saga of those brave Rajputs who once ruled the lands fills the atmosphere with pride and the stories of their fearless actions narrated by the locals is in itself an experience.
