The Mahakumbh is rooted in ancient Hindu mythology, symbolizing the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) by gods and demons to obtain the nectar of immortality. It is believed that drops of this nectar fell at four locations, including Prayagraj, making it one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India.

Pilgrims gather at the Triveni Sangam to take a sacred dip, believed to cleanse sins, bestow divine blessings, and pave the way to liberation. This year, specific dates such as Makar Sankranti, Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Maghi Purnima, and Maha Shivratri are especially auspicious for the ritual.
