As one who visited Gokarna multiple times, i could assure you that it is one of the best beach destinations in India. This temple town in Karnataka is a less touristic version of Goa.
From the northern malabar region of kerala, we board on an overnight train as General compartment passangers. As we are bunch of guys, we are fine with the comfort that General compartment has to offer. The nearest stations are Kumta, Honnavar or Karwar. You should drop at these stations and find a bus to the gokarna town.
From the town you need to trek 2 kms to reach Kudle beach. Kudle beach is covered by small hills to all the sides. So the trekking is itself a great experience. Stay at one of the beach side huts. These huts wont provide much more than a bed, a fan and a mosquito net, but in gokarna we wont stay in rooms for much time. Beaches are so lively at evening. Travellers will be participating in yogas or beach football or could simply sip some beer and enjoy the sunset. You could even find a party if you came on peak seasons.
Om beach is like 3 kms trek from kudle beach. You need to conquer a small hill to reach Ombeach. Unlike kumta, Om will be covered by local tourits. There wont be much shaks. You could find that the beach looks like the simple ‘Om’ (not the electrical one, the one in Hindu texts)
