Meenakshi Cinema

This is the most important temple of the city of Madurai and also the most popular attraction. This temple complex shares space with the Sundereshwarar Temple and it is said that the life of Madurai revolves around these two temples. The original name of this temple is the Meenakshi Amman Kovil and the temple dates around 2000 years back. There are about 12 big and small shrines inside this temple complex and the Golden Lake is also situated inside the temple complex. The name golden lake was because the very rare, rather supernatural golden lotus grew in the pond here with which the first puja of Goddess Indira was done. The rulers who have ruled this place in the early years have all contributed hugely for the betterment and expansion of this great temple.
