Buland Darwaza

Buland Darwaza is located in Fatehpur Sikri, Agra. It is regarded as one of the highest gateways in the world. It was constructed in the year 1601 by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar to commemorate the victory of Mughals over Gujarat. Buland Darwaza is 53m tall and forms the entrance to the fort of Fatehpur Sikri. Buland Darwaza reflects the unparalleled Mughal architectural style with Islamic inscriptions. It is made up of red sandstone with white and black marble added for ornamental purposes. Tour guides are available to explain the rich history of Buland Darwaza. Buland Darwaza is well-connected with neighbouring cities via road. Fatehpur Sikri railway station is located at a distance of 1 km from Buland Darwaza, while Agra Airport is 40 km away. This mesmerizing gateway is packed with vendors and tourists. Buland Darwaza is a fascinating monument for photography enthusiasts and is among the most photographed tourist spots of Agra.
When Akbar won over Gujrat, he built an entranceway to the Fatehpur Sikri to commemorate his victory. He made sure the gateway, built with red sandstone and carved with black and white marbles, matched the grandness of his history. He named it Buland Darwaza, the door of Victory. The 15 storeyed tall arch is the highest gateway built till today in the world. The structure is inscribed with verses from Quran and Persian philosophical quotes. In Akbar's time, it was used by the commoners to enter the capital, Fatehpur Sikri.Tips to visit: Buland Darwaza is part of the section which does not need any ticket. But beware of touts who try to imposter as a travel guide and continue misguiding you.
