Panvel is known to be the most crowded city of the District of Raigad and is also termed as the "Gateway of Konkan". This city is by the Panvel Creek and is about 300 years old. The city was formed during the Mughals and then looked after by the Marathas, Peshwas, Brithish and Portuguese. It was during the Maratha and the Peshwa rule that most of the palatial houses were built here. Once upon a time this place was known for the elcellent quality rice that was sold in the rice market here. Panvel is now quite a developed city with everything from schools, colleges, restaurants and other attractions.
