Hooghly River

Also known as the Bhagirathi- Hooghly, this is a distributary of the River Ganga. The river is associated with the kings of the ancient Sagar Dynasty who are said to have brought down the river from the heavens. This river is the main source of water for all household and commercial purposes of the state of West Bengal. Farakka is the largest barrage built over this river. The river is perennial and thus also floods in parts of Bengal. This river is like the hero of the state as it is important in all fields including Tourism, Agriculture and Industry too.
