If you want to get a taste of two entirely different destinations in one trip, this is your chance! Varanasi is about to witness the glory of the North-east with 'Destination North East', a four-day festival, starting tomorrow. After successful editions in Delhi and Chandigarh, the fest is coming to Varanasi for the first time.

What is ‘Destination North East’?

'Destination North East' aims to let the rest of India experience the rich culture of the Northeast. Union minister for development of the Northeastern region (DoNER), Jitendra Singh, seems excited for the event. He said that the festival will exhibit similarities between the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins from ancient culture, diverse handloom and silk products, spiritual heritage and vibrant tourist hubs.

Who is participating?

All eight Northeastern states will take part in the event. The fest will take place at the IIT (BHU) ground. It will display local handicrafts, handloom, organic products, and cultural troupes. Live experiences with looms, crafts, musical performances, and dances will be a part of the four-day event. Renowned artists and performers from across the country will add spark to the show.

Things to do at the festival:

Visitors can indulge in Indigenous games. Live kitchens will be serving delicacies from the Northeast and Uttar Pradesh.

Band Shillong Chamber Choir along with singers like Papon, Sourabhee Debbarma, Borkung Hrangkhawl and Rekha Bhardwaj are likely to perform along with several Bollywood actors.

Special seminars will be held every morning with experts focusing on Northeastern organic products, food processing, tourism, and water development.

Taking care of business

Jitendra Singh confirmed a B2B session on one of the days for the business community to explore opportunities in the Northeast. The DoNER minister launched the theme song of the festival on Thursday. The entire city seems to be looking forward to the next four days, ever since.
