No online permit. A permit issued the same day of travel. This permit is applicable to both foreigners and Indians intending to visit protected areas(note that foreigners are not permitted in protected areas which are international borders such as Nathula and Gurudongmar lake). You will need to carry a passport size photos and Photo ID proof like passport (With address), voter's ID card, driving license, etc. PAN card is not accepted as it does not have address proof.
However if you contact a tour operator and send all the relevant documentation in advance, they can get the permit ready before your arrival and thus saving you a day. This is very useful if you are time restricted and do not want to spend a full day in Gangtok.

If you are booking through a Travel agency, you can tell them to issue the permit in advance only..otherwise you can get there also..but online permit is not available as of now

Unfortunately online permits are not available. You would either have to take the help of an agent or the hotel staff where you would be staying. Moreover..Nathula is totally dependent on weather and its your pure luck if you get to go there on your visit to sikkim.!!
