If you're not perticular about staying in Pondy, there's a beautiful resort just outside Pondicherry, around 10Kms from Pondy. it's called L' Amby Bay. it's by the beach and have a good environment. Do check it out.

Any places but near to whitetown you ll get rent bikes and scooty from there only.
