If you are an adventure lover with lots of trekking experience and want to take your trekking to the next level of difficulty then Chadar Frozen River Trek is the place for you. Chadar Frozen River (11,123 ft) is located in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. Trekking to Chadar Frozen River requires full nine days and for trekking first day you need to come to Leh by flight. You will feel very cold once you reach Leh as the temperature there would be around -10 to -15. The second day you will move further towards Chilling through a 3hours drive. While driving to Chilling you will go through Pishu village of Zanskar. Once you reach Chilling, from there you will get to walk over frozen river ice. Walking on the frozen ice will turn out to be the most exciting as well as toughest thing in the trek. After walking for 1hour you will reach Tilak: the campsite for today. The next day you move towards the Gyalpo camp. The morning walk on the frozen ice will make you feel like you are walking inside a freezer. Although all your body will be covered with heavy woolens still the coldness out there can be felt on your face. By the sound that the chadar makes you will be able to recognize where the snow is thick and where it is thin. The sound of the chadar changes with the thickness of chadar. Moving further you will go through Chadar Gate. trek essentials:- Back pack & rain cover(50 - 60 ltr) with comfortable shoulder strapsDay pack + rain cover20 - 30 ltr (If hire a mule or porter)Walking stickAdvisable (At least one)Head torch1 Nos.Water bottle/Hydration pack2 bottles of one litre eachPeople who use hydration pack1 hydration pack and 1 bottle of one literCarry at least one thermos flaskSnacksEnergy bars, dry fruits, electral/orsPersonal Medical KitConsult your doctor Be comfy at the trek T-shirts2 Full sleeves (Non-cotton)Fleece T-shirts1 Nos.Fleece jacket1 Nos. This trek is one of the most difficult and challenging treks in the country. The Zanskar River freezes into a sheet of ice and is the only route to access the Zanskar Valley during the winters. All mountain passes are shut down due to snow fall, leaving the Chadar or the frozen Zanskar River as the only route for passage. The ideal or best time for the this trek is in the months of January and February as the swift river is harnessed in the bounds of blocks of ice and the surroundings are all covered in the pristine white beauty of snow. The temperatures are incredibly low during the day time and plummet to uncomfortably freezing temperatures during the night time. Trekkers who want to explore the Zanskar trek must be prepared for facing unsettling temperatures and harsh camping conditions. The total distance covered in the trek is around 105 km, most of which is covered on foot. There might also be instances wherein the trekkers are required to climb icy rocks and boulders. The nights are spent in caves near the frozen river and hence all participants should come prepared with the warmest jackets, sleeping bags and sturdy shoes. The camping conditions, unlike in other trekking expeditions, are extremely tough and hence each participant should be mentally and physically prepared for the challenges ahead. The temperatures are amazingly low during the day time and hover between 15 to 20 degrees while they plummet further to -25 to -35 degrees during the night time. The climatic conditions of this region are quite harsh and extremely cold. So for any visitor who wishes to explore the Zanskar trek, it is extremely important that he is physically and mentally prepared for the trek. The total distance covered during the trek is around 105 km and most of it is covered by walking through these extreme conditions. You may also be required to climb icy rocks and boulders during the journey which makes it extremely essential for you to be physically and mentally fit.

Chadar is one of my dream destinations. By the research i did about Chadar, take care of the clothes you take there. Make sure they are thermal wear to keep you warm enough, water proof and snow proof. Don't forget to take a baclava. Gum boots, wollen socks, hand gloves, Head torch, walking stick, sanitizer, toilet paper, and a first aid kit. i felt these are important and i bought them in advance for my trip. Happy travelling!
