It is better to take a package tour if you are visiting Andaman islands as there are a lot of logistical arrangements required which can turn out to be a hassle. When i visited last year i tried to plan on my own after booking the hotel but was not able to arrange the ferry/cruise tickets to other smaller islands in the andamans.
A local travel agent will take care of all this and save you the hassle of arranging everything yourself , off-course it would be a bit more expensive as compared to when you plan everything yourself.
