I still couldn't believe when I first left my country.

From my university I was accepted to take a student exchange in Italy. The plan was to stay six but it was such a pleasure that I ended up living eighteen months abroad.

As a student I did not have much money to waste, which led me to discover various ways to save: hostels, cheap flights and techniques to spend less.

That was the beginning of all the adventures I have had.

With more than six years as a traveler, I want you to erase that idea that traveling is a very expensive experience or that only some lucky people can do it.

More and more people prefer to have experiences over material things so that we use our income mainly for adventures.

Why travel?

Traveling is much more than marking things on a list. It's great to take your picture with the Eiffel Tower and show it off to your friends on Instagram, but there is something much deeper in these experiences.

The first thing you must be clear about is the reason for wanting to travel. You must be honest with yourself since, once you discover the "why", you will be much more motivated to plan your first adventures. So ask yourself the following questions:

• What do you want to experience and learn?

• What activities make you happy?

This way you can more easily choose your next destination and you will make the most of your stay. Also, if your reason is strong enough, you will be committing yourself more concretely to making your dreams come true.

Traveling allows us to create our own stories and have an invaluable list of memorable experiences. Much better than just accumulating possessions.

When you travel you discover that you are capable of doing things that you had no idea you could do. Here are some reasons why traveling can change your life:

1. You open your mind. Your life tends to improve if you are open to learning new things, learning about other cultures and different ways of thinking. You realize that not everything is the same as what you know.

2. You discover yourself. You step out of your comfort zone if you are trying new things every day; be it being in nature and trying exotic food, attending a religious ceremony, teaching your language or meeting strangers. You discover talents and abilities that you had saved.

3. You learn to interact. By interacting with locals and other travelers, you will be able to understand other cultures and beliefs. You will help create a closer world since we are all equal.

4. You thank life more. You learn to see each place enjoy more and see the world differently. You discover the beauties in which we live: incredible animals, beautiful landscapes, creations of the human being and more.

5. You appreciate moments more than possessions. Possessions come and go - or we accumulate them to feel a burden on us. But in 20 years, those possessions won't make much of a difference in your life and you won't remember them either.

6. You live in the present. You realize that life exists only now, so you enjoy every moment of your journey. You learn to recognize everything around you.

The traveling fears

I know you've heard of people who have fared badly on their travels but trust me… most of the time everything works out!

Fear is a factor you must tame if you want to venture out into the world. Let's talk about the typical excuses you make and discover that they are not as justifiable as you think:

• Family and friends. Family is always important but at some point you must fly away from the nest. The good news is that it is now easier to keep in touch with your acquaintances. In fact, being outside you will discover who are the true friends (those with whom you really keep in touch even with the distances).

• A lot of responsibilities. If traveling is what you want, make it your number one priority. Put yourself and your dreams before everything. The excuses for not having time and many things to do are simply symptoms of fear of taking a trip. Do not let life be made of things that do not bring you happiness or satisfaction.

• My career will suffer. There is still the conception that traveling is simply a thing of wasting time or simple fun, but the reality is that it expands your horizons generating many skills that you can use in your professional life, such as adaptability, problem solving, quick decisions, negotiations, networking, cultural sensitivity, openness and global knowledge.

• Fear to fly. I always panic every time the plane takes off, because it's no longer up to me when I'm in the air, but the plane is still the safest transportation to use. Rest assured that pilots like the airline itself prepare very well on every trip. You could use the plane only for very long distances and choose to use the trains or buses if your destination allows it.

• Is not safe. Perhaps you have heard in the news about all the insecurity in the world that you want to remain locked up in your house. The reality is that any city is just as insecure as the city where you are living. If you have the basic precautions and you will hardly have bad times.

Money as a limitation

It's important that you prioritize what you want out of life to use your income consistently. If you really want to travel, buying a car is not the same as taking a 6-month trip in Europe.

It is true that the amount you have can affect the quality and the places you can visit, but great experiences do not depend on how much money you spend.

There are places, events and people for all types of travel, rest assured that you will find someone to share the way you are looking to experience the world.

Now I have to clarify some of these points so that you do not limit yourself when it comes to money in travel:

1. Traveling is expensive only if you want. The world of tourism is full of many options that may appeal to you: all-paid cruise travel or five-star hotels. Although they do not sound bad, perhaps it is not the type of trip you can afford nor the one you really want to take. The good thing is that there is for all categories; If you move away from traditional tours, you can have great experiences on your own without much importance to the amount of money you have in your pocket.

2. Be a smart traveler. There are too many options to save on your trips, that if you want to have longer trips and have luxuries from time to time without being a millionaire, you can take advantage of the frequent miles and the incentives that some companies give to have very cheap experiences. In fact, if you stay in one place for an extended period, you can save a lot by acting local; buying and making your own food, renting an apartment for months and getting to know the place in stride.

3. Travel with little money. There is always some way to travel with resource menus, you can take advantage of communities like CouchSurfing or maintain emergency savings.

4. Generate income while traveling. There are organizations where you can ask for a temporary job in a hostel, give a service to someone in the place you are, you can even take care of someone else's house through HouseSitting.

Travel & work at the same time

If what you want is that the traveling habit is an integral part of your life, then I am going to show you several of the possibilities that you have within your reach.

• Digital nomads. It's about taking advantage of technology to work wherever you want. From your home, from your favorite coffee or why not, sitting on one of the best beaches in the world. Today there are plenty of options available to have a job online, which I recently did a guide on how to work and travel the world.

• Volunteering. There are organizations that allow you to have experiences in your country or in other parts of the world, such as AIESEC or WWOOF, to live on farms in remote places.

• Work in tourism. You can study something that has to do with tourism and look for a job within hotels, travel agencies, paradisiacal places, among many other options.

• Travel blogger. If you are someone who travels a lot, maybe you can start a blog with your trips. Although it is difficult to make a space for yourself, if you add value to your audience you could make it your way of living & traveling.

• Teach a language abroad. You can take programs that allow you to live in a city abroad. Such is the case of Education First, which combines language training with cultural exchange, academic achievement and educational travel, to offer courses and programs that transform dreams into international opportunities.
