How We Reached and Where We Stayed
We arrived at Lonavala Railway Station at 10 a.m. from Mumbai. The station was bustling, especially on the weekend, with auto drivers and rental cabs readily available. However, prices were noticeably higher due to weekend demand, with auto rickshaws charging around ₹1,500 per day and cabs around ₹2,500 for local sightseeing.
Day 1: Scenic Points, Lakes, and Waterfalls
After a quick breakfast, we set out to explore Lonavala’s most popular spots. Here’s a rundown of our Day 1 itinerary:
• Tiger’s Point (Lion’s Point): A stunning viewpoint, Tiger’s Point offers a panoramic view of valleys, hills, and greenery that’s breathtaking.
• Amby Valley: Known for its beautiful flower gardens, Amby Valley was a serene spot for nature lovers.
• Bhushi Dam: A popular monsoon destination, Bhushi Dam is an ideal place to relax by the flowing water.
• Khandala Lake, Khandala Point & Waterfall: A series of scenic spots within Khandala, these locations are picture-perfect for nature enthusiasts.
• Lonavala Lake: A peaceful spot to enjoy the calm water and a must-visit for anyone looking to unwind.
• Kune Waterfalls: This waterfall, tucked amidst lush greenery, is a beautiful sight.
• Duke’s Nose: A hiking spot with dramatic views that’s a favorite for adventure seekers.
• Shree Narayani Dham Temple: Known for its beautiful architecture, this temple added a spiritual touch to our day.
Day 2: Exploring History and Nature
For our second day, we visited historical forts and scenic spots that are ideal for adventurous travelers:
• Pawna Lake: Before heading to the forts, we stopped at Pawna Lake, where visitors can enjoy a motorboat ride across the lake for a minimal fee. It’s a peaceful experience that offers unique views of the surrounding hills from the middle of the lake—a great way to start the day.
• Lohagad Fort: Next, we trekked up to Lohagad Fort. The trail itself is a refreshing journey, but the views from the top are even more captivating. From the fort, you get a panoramic view of the lush green valleys, Pawna Lake, and nearby hilltops, making it well worth the climb.
• Bhaja Caves: We wrapped up our day at Bhaja Caves, ancient Buddhist caves known for intricate carvings and a glimpse into the area’s rich history.
Tip: For those interested in forts, I recommend covering only one fort per day to fully enjoy the experience. Lohagad Fort, Bhaja Caves, and other locations like Rajmachi Fort and Korigad Fort are ideal to explore separately. Rajmachi, in particular, involves a 17 km trek through the jungle, so it’s best enjoyed in a group.
Additional Recommendations
Many auto and cab drivers usually do not cover places like Valvan Dam, Rajmachi Fort, Dinosaur Park, Lucky’s Celebrity Museum, and Sudhagad Fort in their typical itineraries. Rajmachi Fort is accessible via a jungle trek, adding a sense of adventure for group travelers.
