Mandakini River

The meaning of the word 'Mandakini' is 'calm' or 'unhurried' and the Mandakini River is this a symbol of a woman who flows calmly. This is also an extremely holy river whose mention is found in the Shrimadbhagavatagita as one of the trascendental rivers. The Mandakini is a tributary of the Alakananda River and joins with the same at Rudraprayag after which Alakananda moves towards the Deviprayag. The origin of the river is from the Chorabari Glacier in Kedarnath region and is throughout fed by the Vasukiganga River. After Devaprayag the conjoined river flows as the Bhagirathi River which later merges as the holy Ganges. The NH- 107 runs over this river. The river is said to turn violent during the heavy monsoon seasons and it often destroys villages and even parts of the highway.
