Overview

With an average height of around 12500 feet, Spiti Valley which means 'The Middle Land' is the land between Tibet and India. Bordered by Ladakh in the north, Tibet to the east, Kinnaur to the south-east and Kullu to the south, this peculiar cold desert is one of the least populated regions in India and is the gateway to the northernmost reaches of the nation that forms part of Lahaul and Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh. Spiti is an alpine land with scattered villages and Buddhist monasteries and surrounded by mountainous peaks capped with gleaming snow. It is home to a purely homogeneous Buddhist society of just over 10,000 people who bear stark cultural similarities with their neighbours in Tibet and Ladakh. The valley is a research and cultural centre for Buddhists with world-famous sites that include - Ki Monastery and Tabo monastery. The ideal time to visit Spiti is from May to October when the valley is the most accessible. It is a time when the sun shines high over the valley, which is not merely a destination, but a journey through meandered roads, eloquent villages, shimmering rivers and mighty mountains. Check out the detailed itinerary below for more information.
